I feel hopelessly inadequate when it comes to using masks.

Does anybody know where I can find a very strong and comprehensive explaination and tutorial on masks and how to use them?

I was (ignorantly) always afraid of learning them, now I am not sure how I ever did without them.

open an image
dupe the layer and change it like blur
turn off eye
go to first layer
select part not to blur with loose lasso
invert selection
turn on top layer, make it active
click layer mask icon to make a mask from the selection (little circle in a box at layer palette)
you should see through to layer below the focus part

the masks act like erasing but you can paint on them with a brush by clicking the mask in the palette, (to make your image active click the image thumbnail ) Use the brush tool to change the mask, black and white or different opacities, affect just the mask.
Use right click and you can change masks back to selections.

It’s good for many things when you don’t want to throw out parts of layers by erasing.
