Any idea how I can create an image like the purple & black background on this Getty page?

http://corporate.gettyimages.com/TNBI/source/home.aspx?count ry=usa

Ideally, I would like the black to be on a separate layer to the purple, so I can change the colour easily.

Thanks

Take a look at their tiled background image:
http://corporate.gettyimages.com/TNBI/source/images/bg.gif -save ‘page’ to your hd
-zoom all the way in, it’s a 1-pixel wide vertical slice with two ‘gradients’.

I don’t have any easy ideas how to set it up though, create two layers with the combed mask somehow & save that as psd if you want to change the colors.

create layer and call it ‘colour’ – then fill this layer with purple

create second layer called lines and add the lines

create third layer above ‘colour’ layer and ‘lines’ layer and call it ‘dark grad’ – then add a gradient fill with black to transparent. change the gradient option by clicking the arrow next to the gradient box in the top tool panel.

That should allow you to change the colour by filling the colour layer with the new colour.

first of all do a "print screen" from the getty page open PS and paste into a new doc. crop this so you just have a thin strip from the right hand side of the image
at the top of this strip zoom in to pixel level and take a sample of the two colours that make the gradients fills, one is a magenta and the other is red, then do the same from the bottom to get the other two colours, one is black and the other is a very dark magenta. make a note of these colours.

Leave this open and zoomed in

open a new doc of 72dpi and use the gradient tool and make and save 2 gradient fills using the colours you noted down from earlier.

create a new layer, so you now have two layers pick either layer and use one of the saved gradient fills and then on the other layer use the other gradient fill. if you hold down the shift key the fills will be nice and level

now zoom in to pixel level and line this picture window up with the getty original which should still be open and zoomed in. in the original the lines are 2 pixels deep

in the new picture select the single pixel line mask tool and make sure the mode is add,and in this layer only and just go down the page using the original as your guide and keep clicking to mask off 2 lines of a pixel each until you reach the bottom.

when you have done all the lines i would save the mask.

now select the eraser tool and erease all the masked off bits or just delete them

thats it.

if you want to change colours you can do that in whatever way you normall ywould and to either of the layers.

as i have done it i might as well send you a copy of it !
