Hi

I have recently installed the CS version of Photoshop and Illustrator. Before this I worked on AI 10.0 and Photoshop 7.0. After installing these new versions I removed the older versions through add/remove programs.

However, now I am unable to see thumbnail previews of my AI and image files!!! Earlier whenever I used to open these files in Windows Explorer folders it immediately showed their thumbnail previews, but now I am wasting time as in order to view each file I have to launch the entire program first. How can I correct this problem?

Also AI CS version takes ages to load, how can I boost its start up (other than adding RAM)?

Thanx

correct. see the readme file under photoshop and search this forum for the multitude of threads on this topic. the ability to view thumbs in explorer has been removed due to a problem in explorer that was causing some users to lose data.

Just wanted to add my two cents here – yes, I searched for the "multitude of threads on this topic" – you’d think that would give Adobe a BIG HINT – instead of REMOVING the thumbnail ability, how about fixing the problem it was causing?!
Losing the ability to thumbnail images is infuriating to me to say the least – sorry folks, but PS isn’t the only graphics program I run and I absolutely DESPISE having to open the program every time I want to thumbnail images!!
CS has a lot of fantastic features but if I’d have been smart enough to do my homework before buying it and learned about this thumbnail problem I would have had to seriously considered NOT upgrading. It seems rather arrogant of Adobe to just assume that it’s all peachy (and compaitable with other programs) to eliminate a key feature of windows.
So, Adobe, how about listening to all the grumbling and FIX the darn thing.

Maybe you didn’t read all of the posts. I’m using CS, I have thumbnails, and I don’t have any of problems Adobe tells me that I must have.

you didn’t see the avalanche of threads while 7 was current about people losing data because of an "open file". apparently it’s a ms bug that adobe can’t work around.

I would have had to seriously considered NOT upgrading

you DO know that if you reinstall 7 you’ll get the thumbnails back (and the potentially data losing bug), right?

. It seems rather arrogant of Adobe to just assume that it’s all peachy (and compaitable with other programs) to eliminate a key feature of windows.

it was NOT a feature of windows. it was a feature of adobe’s own PSICON.DLL. the problem was the way the dll interacted with the shell extention feature of windows. THAT feature has a bug in it.

I don’t have any of problems Adobe tells me that I must have.

Neither do I (actually I saw it once, under 7). But I’ve answered TONS of posts from people who have – and have been plenty pissed that they’ve lost their work. So you can take your chances with the psicon.dll in 7, or not, but to continue to support a feature that can potentially cause data loss (even if the percentage of people who hit it is low) is irresponsible.

Wow! This is a definite downer! I’m hoping WHOEVER (WHOMEVER?) will fix this problem. If you are like me you got ALOT of images and cracking each one open to see what it is is very time consuming. I may have to do some file reassociating and see if my old 5.5 is still active.
I really like CS other than this bug…

use the file browser for cs images. the thumbnails are high res and color corrected too.

I’ve the same problem as all above! Have tried using the file browser in Photoshop but it won’t show files with .ai extensions from clip art?? I can view jpg thumbnails in illustrator but not it’s own ai files yet InDesign will show them – seems daft!

What happens to the thumbnail previews in CS that is different from 7?

I am not clear about what is going on with CS, CS browser or Windows browser and don’t want to mess up my PS 7.01.

Thanks,
Mike

Version 7 contains a file called "psicon.dll". This file allows viewing previews in Explorer. Version 8, CS, does not contain this file because it caused problems for SOME people in 7. Therefore, CS shows no previews in Explorer.

psicon.dll caused problems for a LOT of people, and exposed several bugs in the Windows explorer. Since Adobe could not fix the Windows explorer, we had to abandon psicon.dll.

Lets see if I understand:

If I install PS windows explorer will lose the ability to view PSD previews( = thumbnails)? (and does that mean explorer will lose ability to preview only the PSD files?)

And in compensation, Photoshop’s internal browser will show all the thumbnails same as the explorer browser now does.

(BTW: I haven’t experienced any problems viewing PSD previews in explorer and find that feature very handy when sorting my images in explorer.)

Will I still be able to see PSD previews if I leave PS7 installed.

And, has the PSCS browser been improved any since 7? I still find the explorer browser preferable to the PS7 browser because I find it easier to arrange my folders (before the images)
Or, maybe I am getting missing something.
Is there a way to set preferences on the PS7 browser so the folders display at the top of the browser? (I’ve organized my life with subfolders)

<homer>Lynch Mike, eh?</homer> 🙂

Lets see if I understand:

nope, you don’t. let’s see if we can clear it up…

If I install PS windows explorer will lose the ability to view PSD previews( = thumbnails)? (and does that mean explorer will lose ability to preview only the PSD files?)

explorer NEVER had the ability to show PSD’s. that’s purely a function of adobe’s psicon.dll. shipped with at least 6 (buggy, i’ve heard) and 7.

if you leave 7 installed when you install cs you will not lose the ability to view psd thumbnails. that’ll only occur if you ONLY install CS or if you remove 7 after installing CS.

And, has the PSCS browser been improved any since 7?

technically, yes. imo, in my non pro use, no. I use it about the same as i did in 7, which is a lot. but i don’t really care about the higher quality previews or colormanagement and i miss the ability to move it to the 2nd monitor while docked in the option bar. (i REALLY miss that!!!… !!!!… !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

One clarification on Dave’s post.

I THINK if you say no to removing shared files, the psicon.dll file will remain when you uninstall PS 7. That will leave you with the ability to view thumbnails with only PS CS installed.

I haven’t uninstalled 7 on my machine since I still need it for use on large images.

Bob, I can verify that it does remain installed and registered if keep shared files during the PS7 unistall, I’ve done that on both of my machines. Also, another clarification to Dave’s post – psicon.dll goes back at least to Photoshop 4
