How can I move a bunch of third-party filters, actions, etc. from PS7 to my newly installed PS CS? I am troubled by a sentence on the CS user guide: "It is not recommended that you set your Additional Plug-Ins Folder preferences to use your PS 7.0 or earlier plug-ins with Photoshop CS. You will receive error messages if you do this." I would like help in understanding this sentence, but much more importantly, I’d like to learn how to move a third-party filter from my old Photoshop into my new PS CS. Thanks for your consideration of my query.

best to reinstall using the original disks. if you HAVE to move them, make sure you don’t copy the old ps7 (native adobe) filters along with your 3rd party apps. if you do, you’ll wind up with dual entries in your filter list and probably errors running some/most of your native filters.

Bruce:

Another way of looking at this is…
* PS7 came with its own set of native filters and plugins. As I understand it, somewhere between some and many of these are not compatible with CS.
* Into the PS7 plugins folder you installed additional 3rd party folders. This is a common practice.
* PS7 and CS have a preferences option to specify an auxillery plugins folder. * Forgetting the 3rd party plugins in the PS7 folder for a moment, if you point CS to the PS7 plugins folder via the preferences setting, CS will get real confused when it finds the incompatible PS7 filters and plugins, hence the Adobe warning you quoted.

Since you’re going to have to go the hassle of moving/reinstalling plugins anyway, consider this alternative:
* Create a separate folder for your 3rd party plugins, e.g., \Common plugins * Install your plugins from scratch as Dave suggested into separate folders inside this new folder. Some plugins require serial number verification, even if you move them from one folder to another, so have the serial numbers handy.
* Update the CS preference to point to this folder
* Note: There are some 3rd party plugins that just don’t work with CS and others that may need to be updated for CS compatibility. It will depend on your collection. If a given plugin works, it works. If not, you know the drill.

The benefits of this setup:
* You never have to move/reinstall plugins again, just update the preferences entry in the new PS version
* Having isolated 3rd party plugins like this makes it real easy to share them with other applications that can use PS compatible plugins.

Regarding transfer of your actions, see this thread:

Hope this helps connect a few more dots.
