I’m trying to achieve the effect of a layer of dry ice at the bottom of an onstage scene around the actor’s legs. I’ve tried smoke effects, cloud effects and variations of paint brush hardness and opacities but so far I’ve not been succesful. Anyone know how to do this or point me in the direction of a tutorial? Thanks.

For a mag cover, some years back (probably PS v4, or 5), I created a Layer filled with white and did a full Layer Mask (hiding 100% of the Layer), then with pressure sensitive brushes softly "Erased" from the Layer Mask. There was a bit of Ctrl-Z, when a stroke didn’t look right, but I was able to get the effect (smoke rising from a smashed CRT, in my case) that I wanted. When I was done, I adjusted the Opacity of the fog/smoke Layer to my taste. I do not recall taking that stage of the image into Painter, so I believe that it was all done in PS.

Thanks Hunt that worked perfectly (added a little Gaussian Blur to the layer also to give a hint of airborne particles)

Good! Corel Painter has a few more tools, but if you have what you want, there is little need in going that route. However, Painter is a wonderful adjunct to PS.
