DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY TIPS ON PRINTING B/W WITH THE 2200? I JUST DOWNLOADED QUADTONE. I HAVE TRIED IT ONCE AND DIDN’T LIKE THE RESULT. THE PRINT WAS TOO REDDISH BROWN. ARE THERE SETTINGS I CAN CHANGE TO GET TRUE B/W? I REALLY NEED INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING QUADTONE.

Quadtones generally add some amount of color.

What happens when you simply print your black and white images with the printer set to color?

When the image in ps is b/w and the printer is set for color the prints are too blue, the same way they look on the monitor. So I convert the image to rgb and adjust the color of the image to look like b/w. In general any combo of settings I have tried with a b/w image leaves the print too cool. Maybe I was using the wrong profiles?

The profile is critical. There are quite a number of profiles available at the Epson site:

Looking at profiles is a hobby of mine, and I took a look at the Prem Glossy profiles. They decrease the amount of green overall, increase blue below the midtone, and decrease the amount of blue above the midtone.

If you are seeing cyan in the brighter areas of the image, where you are probably more sensitive to it, you may see an improvement in the appearance of your black and white images.

There are "narrow gamut" inks for your printer that are designed to product better quality black and white prints:

There was a guy that put out some software and a set of inks for printing greyscales on the 2200….. I cannot remember the company name but it was a modification to the print driver and interface that changed the way it printed. It substituted several different shades of ink for the CMYK and the light magenta and light cyan to give larget number of grea tones that could be printed.

From what I heard it did an amazing job but still had a bad problem with metamerization…. the difference in appearance of the image when viewed from an angle. It makes the white areas (No ink coverage areas) look different. This can be overcome by spraying your prints with a good UV Fixative which should be done anyway.

I will try to find my old notes about this guy and his ink/printing system but you might try cruising the Epson boards and the Epson web site….

Epson stupidly did not provide their "gray balancer" software with the 2200 (only with the 2100 in Europe), however it is available in English here:

http://support.epson.ru/products/drivers/000780/gb_12ae.zip

It is an excellent piece of work which allows you to set up neutral grays by comparing a series of chip charts printed by your printer with a monochrome reference card. Unfortunately there is no way to get the original Epson card, so you can either spring for a Kodak reference card or just eyeball it. But this is the best way to get neutral tones. You can then move on to duotones or quadtones or whatever. A pdf user’s guide is included, I believe, in the download.
