Precise sizing – converting screen to paper

Does the setting of a document’s size in cm/inches guarantee that exact size when printed to paper?

Could the resolution settings interfere with this?

I’ve had 2 recent issues:

1. I created a 15cm square bitmap at 300ppi to insert into a Word document and it transferred using Word’s "Insert" command way oversize.

2. I created an A4 bitmap at 300 ppi and it printed over 10 pages!

Can’t fathom what I’m doing wrong here.

Thanks,
Adam.

Check the image size and resolution in PS by going to Image>Image Size box. This is the accurate size of the print. Confirm that this is what you want by going to Print with Preview in Photoshop. Make a test print if needed. If the image is perfect, the issue would seem to be with Word. Others here can help troubleshoot image problems in Word.

Word does not necessarily honor the ppi tag in images, which determines the physical size of the image at output.

Also, Word handles different image types differently, AND even that seems to vary between the various versions of MS Office.

So, in short, I know of no way to guarantee that an image made in PS (or any other image editor) will be same physcial size on page as you have set in the imaging program.

Adam,

What format are you saving the images in?

Some formats carry no metadata for physical dimensions or resolution, and leave it up to the receiving application to determine dimensional size.

If you Dave as TIFF, then dimensions should be maintained.

Tiff is pretty darn close in Word 2000, so I’ll eat some of my last post if I may 🙂
