Hi ive recently been asigned to produce a number of "glossy" brochures. I am having trouble in getting my hands on free/reasonably priced, copyright/royalty free photos.
The work i am doing is for commercial use, I have been able to get a hold of a couple of CD’s at a reasonable price but most I simply cant afford. If anybody has any ideas or could point me in the right direction it will be most appreciated.

Thanks

Ben

Hello Ben,

Check out www.istockphoto.com. Their photography is generally quite good, and ranges from $.50 to $1.50 per photo (depending on size). I use them quite a bit, and have generally been very pleased.

You can try Clipart.com. They have a 3 week subscription for $12.95. Might be able to find what you need there. (And they don’t just have clipart. There are photos available. I’m just not sure of the size/resolution.)

ben,
first, there ain’t no free lunch. getty images and corbis do royalty free images i think. depending on the content of the brochures there are sources for obtaining "free" images. if you will be doing business with this client in the future, buy what you need and charge it to the client; bill it as copyright acquisition fees. then the next time you do work for them, give the pix.
best,

Maybe it’s because the image qualities desired are worth the kind of pricing commercial photographers charge. 😉

Check-out www.hemera.com. Inconsistent, but at a buck a piece, it’s worth a try! DB~

I posted this on the ID forum also…

I just got a one-year membership on www.photos.com for $299. That was special price, but I’m sure they offer it all the time. It’s already paid for itself in how many photos I’ve downloaded. The sizes includd in the membership are decent, but the biggest size is still a fee. It’s good for a wide range of subject matter. I have gotten photos of swamps, the San Diego skyline, cell phones, etc.

Also check out Hemera’s Big Boxes of Art. The low end with 255,000 images is only $20.00 at Office Depot. They also have larger collections for around $60.00. All of the art is royalty free! This is the collection I recommend to my students for their projects.

Just note they are fairly low rez…
About 2 x 2 " @ 300 ppi. (look at "use image’s full size checkbox") Yes, you can scale them up in size before saving, but they are just interpolated, and more poorly than you can do in PS itself.
