I also have PS CS installed on my PC. Perhaps, because *.psd files are set to open with PS CS, that is the reason they won’t open in PS CS2. I don’t want to uninstall PS CS yet – so how do I go into that app and deselect it as the app to open *.psd files? Thanks……..

Go to Start, settings, control panel, folder options, file types. Scroll down to .psd and tell it to open with CS2, instead of CS.

That didn’t work. What happens is, when I try to open a *.psd file created in PS CS, the thumbnail of that file briefly appears – then I receive a message that says: "Could not complete your request because the file could not be found." Obviously, since the file showed in a thumbnail, it WAS found. I’m thinking that, perhaps, PS CS is somehow interfering with opening the file in PS CS2. I hate to uninstall PS CS if I don’t have to.

Right click on the thumbnail, select Open With and see if PS CS2 is listed. If it is, click on it. If not, select choose program, find CS2, select always open with option and click it.

The thumbnail doesn’t show itself until I try to use the Open command in PS CS2. Then it only shows for 1/2 second – then I get the error message I referred to. So I can’t right click on it. Besides, I want to open ALL my legacy *.psd files with either PS CS or PS CS2. Any other ideas? Thanks……

I guess I don’t understand what you are calling the thumbnail. Do you know where the file is located on your hard drive? If so, have you tried opening the file in Bridge and then open it in CS2?

With PS CS2 opened, I click on File>Open and navigate to the proper folder where I have some of my legacy *.psd files stored. The title of that window is Open. Placing the cursor on a psd filename (highlighting it) opens what I am calling a thumbnail near the bottom of that window. If I click on that filename, I get the message that says: Could not complete your request because the file could not be found. Obviously, since I can briefly see the file (what I’m calling a thumbnail), PS CS2 CAN find the file – it just won’t open it – or any other legacy *.psd file I have created. Yes, I can open the files in Adobe Bridge. My gut tells me that the problem is that I have two versions of PS installed – but I want to be absolutely sure before I uninstall PS CS.

I would doubt that the installation of both CS & CS2 would cause a conflict. It’s fairly common practice to keep an older ver on a machine, until one is comfortable with the new installation, and that it works well. I had both, plus v7 and v4 on the same box with no ill effects. Other than copying my plug-ins to each ver (where they would work – plus same for some brushes, actions, etc.) there was nothing different with the installations.

Have you attempted to Open the files from WinExplorer/My Computer? Personally, I always use Windows Explorer out of habit, so don’t know how it might differ from My Computer, other than in the View setup initially. Navigate to the folder with the file(s) in question. Right click on it/them, and go to Properties. Check out what that dialog box says. Try double-clicking on one of the files. Try Open With (CS2) on one of the files. In the Tools dropdown, you should see a Tab for Files and you want to see what associations (programs) are listed for that type of file. NOTE: Exact wording is probably different than what I just wrote, as I’m going from memory and don’t really look carefully ’cause I just go to where I need to go – sorry.

One question that I don’t recall seeing asked or answered: can you create a PSD in CS2, Save, then re-Open it? Does that work?

Did you have any problems with the installation of CS2? Is it Activated/ Registered? If not, how long ago did you install it?

Good luck,
Hunt

I would say you’re having a conflict with cs & cs2. I think I recall having both installed and trying to have both programs open at the same time but with different files. I wouldn’t work. I uninstalled cs and now use only cs2. You may want to try and do that. It may require a reinstall of cs2 (not a repair as that fixes nothing).

I completely uninstalled CS2 – but don’t want to mess with CS and all the plugins I have. Thanks for staying with me on this – but I’m now going to wait until I know for sure how to fix this problem before reinstalling CS2. Enough people have told me that they have multiple versions of Photoshop on their systems and they all work (I even went to the Adobe Photoshop Forums).

If you have corrupt preference files causing your problems, uninstalling CS2 or any other flavour will not correct the situation. You will be doing a reinstall and PS will be using the same prefs files prior to the uninstall/reinstall. They are not uninstalled because they are not in the Adobe prog folders, they are in (amongst others) C:\Documents and Settings\"Account name".\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\9.0\Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings.
To delete these files either check your help files or hold down the control, shift and alt keys and at the same time start PS. You will be asked if you want to delete the files, say yes, new ones will be created at start up.

OK, refresh my memory. Did these offending files Open fine in CS, and only gave you a problem in CS2? Do they still Open fine in CS (now without CS2 on your machine)?

And, IIRC, that dialog is in the Open section of CS, as well. It may even go back several versions. My box with both CS & CS2 is being migrated to a wireless network right now, and is down, so I can’t check it at the moment. I’ll bring up Ver7, and Ver4 on another box on Monday, just to see if it’s in those.

Most of all, good luck. Also, see Mike Hyndman’s comment on the Prefs file for CS2. It will not be overwritten automatically by re-installing CS2. If it is causing the problem, you need to clean it out first, then do the re-install. However, didn’t you try "trashing" your Prefs file earlier on?

I got instructions for completely uninstalling CS2 from Adobe – and they included these files.

I had an idea: When you go to Add/Remove Programs, How many MB does it say that CS2 contain? Perhaps I’m getting an incomplete install.

[SNIP]

Don’t think this will help, as I have the entire Premium CS2 Suite installed – 2355MB, but that is for the whole shooting match, not just PS CS2.

That’s a first! See the amount of posts from people who exhibit all kinds of problems, on the Adobeforum site that explicitly says that these files are not removed at uninstall and need to be done as the Help file instructions. There is nothing to lose by doing it anyway.

Over 303MB?

Then the only thing left to do is to uninstall both of them. Clean out all of the files and clean the registry then reinstall cs2. Frank

Thanks for trying so hard. I ended up uninstalling CS2 until I can find a fix that someone says will absolutely work – so I can’t try your method right now. I’ll look up your "Use Adobe Dialog" on CS to see what you mean.

OK, refresh my memory. Did these offending files Open fine in CS, and only gave you a problem in CS2? Do they still Open fine in CS (now without CS2 on
your machine)?

Opened fine in CS – only problems in CS2. They still open fine in CS.

And, IIRC, that dialog is in the Open section of CS, as well. It may even go
back several versions. My box with both CS & CS2 is being migrated to a wireless network right now, and is down, so I can’t check it at the moment.
I’ll bring up Ver7, and Ver4 on another box on Monday, just to see if it’s in
those.

I suspect that my version is not installing correctly.

Most of all, good luck. Also, see Mike Hyndman’s comment on the Prefs file for
CS2. It will not be overwritten automatically by re-installing CS2. If it is
causing the problem, you need to clean it out first, then do the re-install.

how on earth could you repliers not realise by now
that this bobby\something is one of the flip/something trolls?

I don’t know what a ‘troll’ is – and I have a legitimate problem. The last thing I did was to get rid of all references to any old Photoshop versions both in Program Files and the Registry – then installed the trial version. Same result: PS CS2 says it can’t find the file. Also, the uninstall still says that the size is only 217.00MB.
