thumbnails do not work in windows explorer for photoshop cs.
why is that?

It’s an "improvement" in the new version. You have to use the photoshop file browser.
Robert, I’m not with you here. I use CS and I can view all the same file types as thumbnails in an Explorer window as I did with previous PS versions and, AFAIK, this was from a default install. Are you perhaps speaking to a different issue?
No, same issue. Thumbnail views in Windows Explorer of Photoshop files are produced by a program called psicon.dll. psicon.dll is very, very buggy. Adobe says the bugs are Microsoft’s fault. Microsoft says the bugs are Adobe’s fault. Adobe wimped out and decided not to distribute psicon.dll any more.
So:
* Photoshop 7 includes psicon.dll.
* Photoshop CS does not include psicon.dll.
* If you install Photoshop CS without ever having had a
previous version of Photoshop, you will get no thumbnail views in Windows Explorer.
* If you install Photoshop 7 and then install Photoshop CS, psicon.dll will probably still work as usual.
* If you install Photoshop 7, uninstall Photoshop 7, and then install Photoshop CS, things get complicated.
It is possible to install psicon.dll yourself, but it requires some complicated registry editing. Instructions can be found in previous posts in comp.graphics.apps.photoshop and in Adobe’s forums.
