Greetings,

I’m currently using a Viewsonic VP171b LCD and I’m pretty happy with it but maybe that’s because I have nothing to compare it to and I’ve heard that for photo editing and the best graphics, CRT’s still have the edge? Anyone care to comment on this? I havn’t used a CRT for awhile and I’ve never used one that is digital. I’m in the process of building a new PC and I want the best display possible!

Thanks,
Ray

Hi Ray,

This is a rapidly shifting technology, and you’ll get a variety of opinions on this one. IMHO, the age of the LCD is here, and has been for several years. If your printouts match your display relatively closely, you are set. If not, there are a number of things you can do to address this. —

There is no doubt that color management, or the art of getting a print to reasonably match a monitor image on the first try, is easier with even a medium quality CRT than an LCD. However with tweaking a good quality LCD can yield excellent results. As my last, beloved, CRT is slowly going out of alignment I am researching flat panel displays myself.

I love my 3 Samsung 213T SyncMaster flatscreens! They offer very good approximations of what my prints will look like.

It depends on how critical you are and what you’re doing.

For extremely precise color correction for files intended to be printed on a printing press, and very demanding clients, you can’t beat a high-end CRT.

Even the top-of-the-line LCD displays on the market right now still do shift colors slightly as your viewing angle changes, though modern LCDs have almost completely resolved this problem, and it’s unlikely that any but a critical observer will notice these days. And the technology keeps getting better.

For midrange color correction for press, or for home use or color correction for an inkjet printer, good LCDs work just fine. The cheaper LCDs found in low-end laptops and cheap flat-panel displays still have a number of drawbacks and deficiencies that make them inappropriate for even reasonably challenging color correction, but higher-end LCDs are excellent.
