I was asked to clean up the noise in some ASA 1600 digital camera shots so decided to download Neat Image and Grain Surgery to check them out.

When I load the demo version of NI I can no longer see the RAW files in CS with the File Browser, even after re-assigning the RAW files to Photoshop as the default program for them. I’m guessing NI wants to run the RAW images itself. I deleted NI and can now see the RAW files so I’ll forgive them but it’s pretty worthless to me if I can’t do my RAW conversions in Photoshop first.

Anyway, if you’re familiar with NI is there a way to load the demo version (or a setting after it’s loaded) so that it doesn’t interfere with Photoshop’s RAW capability? I read thru the 50 page PDF manual and didn’t see anything about this. I see the Pro+ version lets you use NI as a Photoshop plug-in but the demo is a stand-alone app.

Thanks, if you can help. Hopefully it’s something obvious that I missed.

Bill, I’m not sure if this any help, but when I downloaded the NI demo about 2 months ago, it would only work with JPG’s, not RAW or TIFF. Since the demo is not a plug-in, this bug is interesting, to say the least.

Huh…I’ll reinstall it and see what it does to my system.

Bill-

I ran the old demo (ver 2.6), downloaded the new demo (ver 3.0), and zero problems with RAW in CS. I’ve got both programs loaded and up, and can see RAW and convert them in CS just like always.

Something else is going on (and what it could be I haven’t a clue.)

Got this figured out, it wasn’t a Neat Image problem after all, but looks like something caused by a new update of my Virus Scan software. Go figure …

By the way, NI worked great on noisy asa 1600 Canon 10D files, I was surprised at how well it did. Nice piece of software.

Hey Sage, thanks for the input … I was able to open an 8 bit tiff with the V3 demo but could only save the filtered file as a jpeg, but this is covered in the files somewhere. The demo is crippled so you’ll buy the real thing, but at least you get a clean jpeg out of it, unlike most demo software outputs with logos or patterns on them.

I was really impressed with the results, think I’ll buy the Pro version, which handles 16 bit files.

Well Bill, you’ve just costed me 80 dollars, and that just before christmas 🙂
More seriously, this software is incredible, fixing the seemignly unfixable, so thank’s for letting me, and others, know about it (in an indirect way).
