I have some old digital camera photos that have small shadows around the people in the photos. I think the shadows were caused by the camera’s flash. The shadows are mostly noticeable when there is a blank, lighter-colored wall behind the people.

Is there an easy way to have PS remove such shadows? I tried a few of PS’s ‘tools’, but my hand is just not steady enough.

Thanks

You can try to select the shadow area by using the magic wand tool. You will have to try various settings as to the range of values it will select. Also leave the contiguous setting on. You may also have to select in chunks and keep adding to the total selection. After you have selected what you want copy the selected area to a new layer and then add an adjustment layer. I suggest trying curves and try to raise the dark values up. Don’t do too much or it will look odd.

Take a look at this NG. Depending on how you news reader is set up, a half- dozen articles above your’s is one entitled, "removing shadows from flash shots." The OP found an interesting tutorial for just this problem. Give that thread a read.

OK, didn’t notice that this was X-posted to two NG’s. A good idea in this case. My suggestion for a recent, previous article is for comp.graphics.apps. photoshop, as that article was not X-posted.
