I must be really stupid as every tute I have read looks really simple but when I try to do it, either text is invisible or on top of itself.

Path starts here x________________________________________________ ends here.

I click at the beginning of the path [x] and start typing without success.

I tried the spiral custom shape and the text went on top of itself.

I have read the help files and followed them, however, I guess I am missing something.

Can someone get me on the right track – I am hoping someone else made the same mistakes as I have!

Thanks

As to invisible text, have you picked a colour other than white, so it shows against the background ? i know it sounds obvious but its easy to forget to pick a colour

Wish it was that easy – colour yes, visible layer yes, top layer yes, yes, yes! 😛

I will soldier on and keep trying.

Thanks

try setting the type to default for kerning tracking etc before you type (character palette)
try different alignment of type

Ok. That works really well.

Next problem is that every so often letters over-lap each other which makes them look crooked.

glad that worked, it’s a feature I haven’t used very often but when I did I had the same issues with it at first. There is also some command that let’s you drag the text along the path and also under it which it kept doing when I didn’t want it to. It also seems to eat up RAM and is slower than the reg text tools.
Whenever possible I use the warp text palette instead. Have you tried it??
