I am using CS on a PC with XP Pro. I am very new to CS and would like to print a contact sheet. The contact sheet setup has a font drop down that shows on my PC three font choices — New Times Roman, Arial, and Courier. I want to create the contact sheet using a 6 point size font. Unfortunately at 6 points each of these fonts does not print clearly.

I would like to use one of the many other fonts I have installed in XP instead of the three that are now shown. I also see in some books that some PCs have Helvetica in the drop down box, a font that I don’t have.

Is there any way to point CS to a different font or to install a different font in CS?

I have PS 7, not CS, so I apologise if this does not work.

When you are in the Contact Sheet dialog, uncheck the Flatten Layers box. When the contact sheet has been created, link all the text layers and select the text tool. Now you should have control of the font and size.

I have no idea why you get a limited choice to start with. I guess this covers most people’s needs and saves lots of scroling down a list. There are dumb people who install hundreds of fonts on their machines – this is only the beginning of their problems.

BTW, Helvetica is, I believe, the Mac font which we would call Arial.

Thank you for the reponse. Either it doesn’t work or more likely I don’t know what I am doing. I can get to the character palette, but after I change the font, I don’t see any change on the contact sheet. Is there some control I have to press to get the character palette settigns to transfer to the contact sheet?

I didn’t mention the character palette.

Just follow my sequence and change the font in the bar at the top of the screen.

I guess I am too much of a newbie and I am not able to follow your directions. How do I link all of the text layers and as the text tool, do you mean the "T" from the tools icons?

Once I do this I need to actually change the font used under each thumbnail on the contact sheet. How do I then change the nmaes under each thumbnail?

How do I link all of the text layers

Click on one of them in the layers palette. See the little paintbrush icon? Click in the same box on each other text layer and a little "Chain link" icon will appear.

and as the text tool, do you mean the "T" from the tools icons?

Yes.

Now you can select a font from the pull-down at the top of the screen and it will be applied to very one.

To change the text, just unlink the layers [click on some other layer in the palette]. Now, still with the text tool, click on a piece of text you want to change.

You may need to adjust magnification [CTRL/+ and CTRL/-] and move around the image [scroll bars or Hand tool – just hold down SPACE to get it temporarily].
