Hello there,

Where start to create objects for a top view game ? I’d like to add some "3d" effect, mainly using shadows.

Here is the kind of what I’m looking for

look at the house on the top left corner, and also the barriers with shadows.

Wich program is used ? are they created in 3d ?

Thanks for helping.

Bob

You can do most of this in PS. Just experiment with adding drop shadows.

FWIW, there are a number of good books out there on the subject of creating artwork for games. Two that I’ve bought recently are;

"3D Game Textures: Create Professional Game Art Using Photoshop", by Luke Ahearn
and
"The Dark Side of Game Texturing", by David Franson

Both books are filled with good photoshop tutorials.

These two books are somewhat updated versions of;

"2D Artwork and 3D Modeling for Game Artists", by David Franson and Andre’ LaMothe
and
"3D Game Art: f/x & Design", by Luke Ahearn

I found both of these older books at a local usedbook store going for about $5 each.

There are a number of online communities that focus on game making – most have links to or their own libraries of photoshop tutorials that you can access.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply. Could you please give some sites that propose tutorials on Photoshop.

I’m particularly looking for creating a road with lines (left and right: continue, middle discontinue)
like this:
______________
– – – – – – – – – – –
______________
because I’m creating a car racing game in flash.

I’d like to create it given a path or doing it quite simple, with the curves and so on….Also the sides should be dirty (as there is grass on the border side). Do you know how to do so ? I only need top view game, a flat game, with not a real 3d effect.

Hmm, I’ll take a look and see if I can scare up a few tutorial sites for you. Right now I’m at home and on dialup – so it ain’t going to be quick.

But a few suggestions based on the image you posted a link to.

1) Take a look at the thread in this forum – where someone is working on something of a similar nature. It might give you a few ideas.

Urban Brick Street/Road Project

2) Here is one of the most popular (according to the quick search I did on google) tutorial on creating a road surface in PS.

Road Texture

3) If you have a broadband connection, you might download this collection of pre-made texture maps. Several years ago a company was going to produce a game called Golgotha – but the project was abandoned. They dumped all the resources that they had created into public domain – texture maps, sound files, source code, etc. There are a number of sites that have this stuff for download – the one I’ve posted a link to is just one I ran across doing a quick link – you might look and see if there is a site you like better. Some sites have the texture maps set up where you can browse through them and get the ones that interest you. Anyway – you might find something you could use or at least something that would give you some ideas for your own work.

4) If you’ve got the money to spend – you might look at getting something like this roadway generator. I have no clue as to how good something like this is, but I ran acrossit and thought I’d mention it.

Road & Car Park Generators Bundle – psd

5) If this was me that was doing something like this, one of the things I would look into is creating some custom brushes of the diffrent elements – like the road strips, the grass, the gravel, and so on.
