Hi,

I’ve gotten some graphic .PNG files recently. Would somebody please tell me the advantages or disadvantages of this file system?

TIA,

Advantage, high quality images plus transparency (unlike jpg). Disadvantage, not supported by all browsers, specifically Internet Explorer.

‘fraid not. Not in Windows. IE 7 is supposed to when it comes out. I have 6, latest updates. You need a javascript or other workaround in your web page to display the transparency properly.

Fireforx supports PNG.

Of course.

IE cannot handle PNG transparancies. PNGs with transparent parts look like shit in IE.

Not with transparency. It will display a PNG file as long as it is not a 24-bit transparent PNG, but it does not display 24-bit transparent PNG images correctly.

Files can be larger than the same image in JPG. You have to decide if lossy compression is a problem (jpg) or if you really need the loss-less compression (png). If IE was to ever support all of PNG especially the alpha level transparency it would be great. As it stands now you have to install a plug-in to get that and even that has problems.

Files in PNG can also be (much) smaller than JPEG, it depends on the contents. For photos use JPEG, for line art/screen shots use PNG (or GIF).

As long as you don’t use alphablending for transparency in PNG images, IE displays PNG files correctly. So IE supports PNG, but not the complete feature list 😉

Which is a rather severe con, IMHO.

And, the one big thing about PNG is the alpha transparency. That is the one thing that is really needed for the web. So since IE doesn’t support that I see little reason to use PNG for the web. Shame really.
