Hello,

I have been using Photoshop since v4, religiously for the past 5 years. Ihave owned CS since it came out and have noticed some strange behaviors.

1. Type going missing

This one, I have read on these forums, is caused by having the info panel open while typing and being zoomed in. Basically, the text doesn’t refresh when typing, and it seems some of type is missing, only to reappear when you zoom out.

2. Pencil Tool error

In Photoshop, you can use the pen tool to draw a straight line between a click to the next one while holding down the shift key; Click, hold down shift and click again, and PS draws a line between the two points. This feature stops working all by itself. The only fix I have found is to reset the preferences.

3. Jumpy selections

When making a selection and trying to move it, while being zoomed in, the selection jumps to a different area of the canvas. Haven’t found a fix.

4. Jumpy pixels

Along the same line as item 3. When moving or alt+dragging (copying) stuff, while zoomed in, it jumps to a different area of the canvas. No fix!

5. Missing guides

Sometimes when moving a guide, it disappears from the canvas. And I don’t mean when dragging it off the canvas 😉

6. Lag time

It doesn’t matter what tool you’re using, or if you are just viewing at 100%, the whole screen freezes for a few seconds.

Standard Adobe responses:

1. You have hardware problems and/or issues with other software.

2. If there would happen to be anything wrong with CS (but we’re not saying there is) it won’t be fixed until CS2 comes out. Why? Because that’s the way we’ve chosen to run our business.

3. Patches? We don’t need no stinking patches.

Most of what you’ve listed seems to point squarely at dodgy video card drivers.

Go Display Properties>Settings>Advanced>Troubleshoot and back off the hardware acceleration slider incrementally to "None" to see if this fixes your problems. If it does, then update your drivers.

I recall AI 9 had some issues, and Adobe came out with a patch for it. I use PS for 5+ hours a day, and the above "bugs" are annoying to say the least.

I’m hoping that this opens the door for others to join this conversation and maybe the good folks at Adobe can respond. Macromedia has a responsive forum staff. I’m new here (joined today). Hope Adobe likes their users enough to reply.

and make sure you’re memory settings aren’t above 50 or 60% but i like fred’s answer as a start. Ho’s just bitter… 😉

see this doc:

Ian Lyons "Optimising Adobe Photoshop Performance" 2/29/04 3:08am </cgi-bin/webx?50>

is that 2.4 hyperthreaded? if so apply this:

Russell Proulx "Photoshop CS MPSupport plugin update now available" 5/19/04 6:01pm </cgi-bin/webx?13/11>

and since you’re also having "refresh" problems, make sure you’re also applied this:

Chris Cox "Photoshop CS Adjusted Refresh plug-in now available" 6/11/04 7:06pm </cgi-bin/webx?13/22>

Ho – what is your problem?

2) probably means that you selected a brush preset that has spacing turned off.

3-5) I haven’t seen any of those.

6) Is the disk active when it pauses? If so, you may have Photoshop’s memory percentage set too high (forcing the OS to page out VM).
If not, then I’d look for driver problems.

Hello All,

Thanks for the great responses (except for Ho’s cynicism).

Well I updated the graphics drivers – didn’t solve the problems that I thought it would solve (the jumping of objects/selections + guide disappearing). The virtual mem is set to 50%.

Chris Cox:
I’m using the pencil tool with a 1 pixel brush. It works great most of the time (click+hold shift+click to connect the dots) but then it loses that capability and I have to reset the prefs.

I haven’t tried the hardware acceleration method, but thought that updating the driver would take care of that.

I’ll look into those links.

The lag time happens whenever. I mean I could be using a pencil tool to place a pixel and wham, I have to wait a second for it to appear.

Question:
Could this be a monitor/resolution thing? My first monitor is set at 1440×900 and my second monitor is running at 1920×1440.

Thank everyone for your responses.

Shahin – again, you are probably picking a brush preset that has spacing turned off. Don’t do that, or turn spacing back on.

Chris,

You are correct. I checked spacing and it connects again. There must be a keyboard shortcut that enables/disables spacing – because I don’t change the brush when the spacing gets diasbled. I probably accidentally get to a key on the keyboard that does this…

But thanks! That solved a huge problem for me as my work often requires pixel-precision.

Anyone know that shortcut?

Thanks,

Shahin

For the text, I noticed it too: you need to be zoomed at 100% to see the text appear as you type. Verified on Photoshop 7 a P4 2.4 ghz… do we need a faster processor to have real time text input even when zoomed in? I’ll try to see the importance of the info palette.

It seems that on my athlon64 2.8 I don’t have the problem as strongly as with the P4… but I had some screen refresh oddities with text.

Re: dave’s post (10/12)

Could one of the forum moderators/hosts please update the Photoshop 6 and 7 Keyboard Shortcuts <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?50@@.ef4d222> FAQ to include the PS CS keyboard shortcuts? Here are the links:
