Maya,

It’s a technical term when you submit an article to a newspaper/magazine. They want to make sure there is enough area outside your image for additional processing.

It’s hard to describe not knowing what the criteria are but there is a function within PS to designate the "TRAP" area within your dimensions under "Image>Trap" and you set the area around for bleed(Pixels) but again it depends on what it is you’re asked, i.e ¼, ½, or ¾ page Advert or Image.

Essentially it’s the working area/image outside your image.

Tip: Tell then you want to design your own ad and you’ll get discount. They may try to play it down but push it and you could get up to 25% asking price, assuming that’s what you’re talking about

Hi
well was asked to do a small mail order catalog for a music label

<http://www.rockagainstass.com/gslc.html>
this is what came out. side 1 and side 2.

but i totally forgot to leave space for that bleed thing.

I have no idea how to add more space (bleed) on the images.. dont wanna start all over again..

I know there is a way… somehow.. somewhere..

the size of the catalog is 4.75"
but with the bleed it needs to be 5.25"
how the hell do i do that.. : ((((((

p.s. i cant use "trap" for some odd reason.

Trap is only active in CMYK mode, and it’s not the same as bleed. Bleed is simply printing larger than the final size so that when trimmed, image is for sure borderless.

Unfortunately, you can’t simply make one side of the page larger, without "warping" the image.

Can you possibly do this?:

Use Image/Image Size.
Check Contrain Proportions.
Leave at same PPI you have now, change the problem side to 5.25. The other side will grow (and the whole image will upsample some, but assuming you already have around 300ppi?, shouldn’t matter much).

Only question is, will the info that’s on the other dimension still be there when trimmed to the dimensions you now have?

Only other thing I could think to do is "cheat" the one dimension by adding canvas size to make the 5.25 on the one dimension only. Then you’d have to clone what’s on the edges on over the extended area. Glancing at your images, this might be doable.

Next time Maya ask for the specifications before you start the job and if theres something you dont understand ask… or then you will at least know if you can handle the job.

PS> Maya a bleed is simply making your document larger than final size so when they cut it down they have a margin for error.

Nice article Phos. Worth a million words. Maya is sure to "get it" if she returns and follows your link.

So I take it that CS has the corner marks issue fixed? Previous versions would not offset the corner mark by the bleed amount. Then again, why print marks from PS? That’s what layout programs are for…

Hey Maya…

In looking at it you could always just scale the background a little bit wider to compensate for the bleed… meaning go back into photoshop create a new document and set your document image size to the ultimate size that is needed with the bleed and then open your psd file and pull the background in. Scale it to fit your new document and then pull your words in and so forth. then save that as your new document.

I think this will work. If not sorry I couldn’t help.
