empty out your temp folders. reboot and try again.
Should the release version mention a source file name (SetupDLL.cpp) in error messages?
that’s an install shield error (-5004)
look in my computer> properties> advanced> enviornment variables and look in the upper and lower sections for instances of TMP and TEMP.
in explorer go to those folders (any that are mentioned) and empty everything out of them. then copy the photoshop directory from the cd to your desktop and run setup from there.
I have already done everything you said Dave.. but there’s no result..
Was it ever working on this machine, or is this the first time you’ve tried installing it?
Additionally, are there any scratches or damage on the CD surface?
one last try, create a new user from control panel> users then try to install (must be an administrator) when logged on as that user.
that error usually means there’s either another copy of install shield’s "setup.exe" running somewhere (you can try to find it in task manager) or that there’s some temp setup files left around somewhere from another program install and ps’s installer is picking up part of that other package as it’s own, and is getting confused and throwing that error.
creating another user should bypass both issues.
is it a home machine or corporate?
is it xp home or pro?
are you an administrator on the machine?
It is not first time Gabriel.. it was working before i’ve reinstalled Window. There’re no stratches or damages..
Dave, it’s home machine, XP Pro, i’m Administrator.
I’ll try to create another user ..
created.. without a result 🙁
sounds like a bad disk. call adobe.
that’s an install shield error (-5004)
But should it know a source file name? Isn’t that sort of thing stripped out, so all you could know is what compiled module it lives in?
I’m just asking, I don’t know. I can recommend a little setup package that I use… but then this would start drifting.
who knows what adobe puts in their installation package. get the demo version and check out the cab files. 🙂
I just got install shield x at work. haven’t really started with it yet. i’m pretty good w/install shield 5.5 though. (yea, we’ve skipped a few versions. <g>)
Dave,
If you are doing in-house setup things, you might want to try NSIS. It is customizable enough, but simple for one-offs, too. Use the PSP utility to shrink the EXE a bit more, when it’s all done. NSIS is free, from here:

http://nsis.sourceforge.net/home/>
It won’t ever see any source code file names… unless you want it to.
LogOFF,
Copy the whole of the Photoshop folder to your HDD, re-boot into Safe Mode and try installing from the HDD
I have copied it long time ago.. i didn’t even try to install it from cd.. i’ll try to install in Safe Mode..
Safe Mode – the same message.. no result 🙁
backup and reformat. reinstall xp. did you possibly install it over an existing windows installation?
yes, i installed it over existing installation..
You should do a clean install of XP – preferably to a freshly formatted partition – followed by a re-install of all your applications, devices etc.
I know it will help, but if i wanted to do it I wouldn’t consult with this forum..
You’ve just had people spend a lot of time trying to help and that’s the response you give?
I think you’ve got a hell of a lot of nerve.
Your problems can be traced to your Windows upgrade. Do a clean install or keep on having problems, your choice.
Bob
THanks a lot, good people!
But my problem is unsolved and i think it can be solved without clean installation. I’ll try to solve it myself.
and i think it can be solved without clean installation.
you might, but then what about the next one, or the next.
by not doing a format when installing xp or 2k over a win 9x/me system you pick up all the inherent garbage and registry sludge from the older model os. do yourself a favor. you’ll be amazed at how great xp responds on a fresh drive.
if not, then, good luck.
I have installed it over XP, not 9x/Me.
hmm… so you’re saying that xp was the original os on the system? that’s what i was asking.
you’re really at a tough point here. SOMEthing is way outta whack on your system because several of the steps we took should have gotten it to work. (new user, installing in safe mode etc.). The only other thing i can think of is maybe reinstall sp1 and other patches. you have something corrupt on your system somewere. a format/install would fix it. anything else is trying to apply band aids.
point blank question time, where did you get the copy of photoshop? is it legit or was it purchased from a "backup" company. Is it a full version or an upgrade. Did you pay full price for it?
IOW, is it an official Adobe distribution or something from somewhere else.
you have something corrupt on your system somewere
yes.. and I just want to know where and what exactly could it be. I think there are some corrupted entries in registry and i’m trying to find them.. It’s full legit version.
And I’m sure that format/install would fix everything but I’ll do it only if nothing else would help.. or maybe I’ll just be waiting for Photoshop 9 🙂
good to know it’s legit. keeps us from guessing and eliminates that as a problem.
I know you’re reluctant… I was too. Put it off for months. Just did a full format and reinstall a couple of weeks ago (on a system that’d been running pretty flawlessly for a year and a 1/2), but MAN THIS SUCKER SCREAMS now! It’s night and day. If you have more than 1 hard drive, backup is as easy as copy to the data drive and off you go. I know it sucks, but you won’t be dissapointed, it’s not as much trouble as it sounds. Took me about a day and a 1/2 to get back everything I had on my system and get it set up the way I like it.
Whatever you decide to do, good luck. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
dave
or maybe I’ll just be waiting for Photoshop 9
based on an 18 month upgrade cycle, you’ve got about a year more to wait. pretty long time for a program you spent so much $$$ on. <shrug> YMMV
