Making a path from a circle selection

Hey all

I’m trying to create a circle path by first using the Elliptical marquee tool to draw out a nice circle and then make a work path from it. But the work path isn’t representative of the circle one bit – actually it doesn’t resemble a circle at all, it looks more like a inflated balloon. So my question is – how does one make a round path in Photoshop CS2?

Make a perfect circle with the eliptical marquee tool by holding the shift key. Then choose ‘Make work path’ from the path pallette and set the tolerance to the lowest value (0.5 pixels). That should give you a perfectly round path.

If you don’t know the answer, say nothing. Of course you can make a perfectly round path in Photoshop as well.

Nope; not even close. Try it.

If you do this, the resulting path will be quite jagged. This is to be expected, if you understand what a selection is.

A selection is a pixel-based object. A perfectly round selection is not possible; because the selection itself is made of pixels, and because pixels are square, a selection that is curved will always be "stairstepped." Setting a very low tolerance on the path makes the problem worse, as it causes the path to follow the stairstepping faithfully.

To make a perfectly round path, use the Ellipse tool. When you click on the Ellipse tool (or any Shape tool), you can tell it to make a path by clicking on the Paths button in the Options bar. The Paths button is the one that looks like a square with a pen icon over it. On the Options bar, it is the center button in the group of three buttons on the left-hand side.

Here’s my shot at an answer: create a circular path directly by using the elliptical shape tool in path mode. Hold down shift to constrain the path to a circle.
