Having read alot about scratch file problems with XP and having built a new XP computer and having problems for the first time – Photoshop will freeze the system ususally when trying to save – I bought a new hard drive. Well, when I go to specify the scratch file, my new "F" drive doesn’t show up in the list – only "setup" and "C". Do I need to install Photoshop on the new hard drive? This is driving me nutty….

Does it show up when you click on "My Computer"?

You said "new" hard drive, have you installed any programs to it yet?

If not, try going into the Control Panel>Administrative tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management. If your new drive appears on this list right click it, choose change drive letter and change it to any alpha character subsequent to the letter H.

Anything between H and Z is good.

You will be asked if you are sure you want to change the drive letter since changing it will cause any programs installed on this volume to fail. Click yes and re-boot your system. A re-boot is probably unnecessary but I would do it just to be on the safe side.

Start up your Photoshop software after the re-boot and see if you can access the new drive through the scratch disk browser this time.

stupid point, but make sure the "new" drive is formatted! 🙂

ahh, yeah, it’s formatted and all and does show up thru "My Computer.." I built this kick ass new mach for graphics apps and.. whoa… I’ll try putting something on the disk and see if that does anything.

scotty, is it still locking up on you? is the whole system freezing? that’s indicitive of a hardware failure.

Also if you format it, defrag it as well, just for the health of the harddrive

if you format it, you don’t need to defrag it. defragging is for moving existing programs to contiguous space on the hard drive. when you format there are no programs left and it’s all contiguous!

Does the whole machine lock up? If so, read the FAQ.

Is the new hard drive internal or external? External drives are usually "removable" and thus unavailable as scratch drives. Also, they’re really slow compared to internal drives.
