What DPI should I be working in? 300?…publishing…..

I am working on a project that will be published.

the scale is small, about greeting card size/full color

I want the BEST yet most PRACTICAL size for the resolution. Should it be 300 or higher?

Any help would be GREAT!!!! THANX

300 is a nice starting #, but it really depends on the actual printer that’ll run the piece. supply that info if you can and the print gurus should be here shortly. 🙂

As Dave says, 300 is always a good start, but for most commercial printing you can likely get away with 225-250.

Call your printer and ask.

Adding to Dave and Robert, I am not a professional but the most important thing I have learned is to talk to a reputable printer FIRST and plan your project’s specifications second, unless you have unlimited time and money.

I’m in the industry – trade magazines. We tell everyone (though they don’t always listen), 300 dpi. Now we can cheat with lower quality stuff on small pics – though they will look crummy. But anything major – 300 dpi or better. For covers we like a bit higher-res and then downsize it. If you are working for a large format glossy think higher.
The real answer is of course, find out from your publisher or printer what they want. Make them happy and they will like working with you again.
