What is your leading setting in the Character palette? Change it to Auto (with the text highlighted) and see if that changes anything.

I use PS7 and it does that from time to time, giant line leading and giant point sizes
seem to pop up from time to time in the paragraph dialog box.

So, I`ve had area box big enough and tried last thing that you suggest…change to auto…and works now.
My default setting was 3500pt :), don`t know why.
