CS jpeg export – losing Color Profile

I need to save Photoshop CS images in the jpeg format. With CS, the only way I can see to do this is with the ‘File > Save for Web’ command. When I select the ‘use document color profile’ while saving for web, it displays the image with the same coloration as in the psd file. However, when I save the jpg version, and open it with Internet Explorer, the image does not have the color profile coloration, but rather appears as though I had checked the ‘uncompensated color’ choice.

Note – I am using the same monitor with both Photoshop and Internet Explorer; I have selected the highest quality for the jpegs, and have tried checking the ICC box (no impact).

Questions:

1) is there a better way to create jpegs?
2) how can I create jpegs that are similar to the psd as to coloraton?

Thanks for any assistance with this issue.

Bob

Doesn’t matter if you embed the color profile or not, browsers don’t heed them.
You’ll need to view image with Monitor RGB or use sRGB as your profile. Actually, Save for Web right panel should show you what JPEG will look like in browser (on your machine).
But might as well drop the color profile option, that’s 2K or so for nothing.

You can "Save As…" a JPEG if the image is flattened (ie no layers)

Mac browsers do! On the Windows platform all you need do is embed a short line of HTML code along with the image in your page and IE for Windows will handle the colour correctly.

Nevertheless it is still much better to convert all images that you propose to show on the web to sRGB.

Mac browsers do!

Yes, I forgot about this claim…
Actually, only last version of IE for the Mac, right?
Or do Safari, others do also?

As for the Windows version, I didn’t know there was any code to utilize color profiling. Is there info on your site about this?

Mac,

IE for Mac since version 4.5 and Safari from the beginning. With IE untagged images are assumed to be sRGB and the necessary conversions are made otherwise the embedded profile is honoured in full. With Safari (most recent version) untagged images are assumed to be monitor RGB (sadly the ColorSync team thought it was Generic RGB <God help us when the code folk are confused>) and like IE all embedded profiles are honoured.

As for the code for Windows – nope it’s not on my site, but you can find it here:

Lars Ekdahl (he translates some of my tutorials into Swedish) has more info here:

I’m having a problem similar to Bob’s. I’ve been working with CS since it came out, but this just recently started happening. I have my photo open in Photoshop and all looks fine. I shoot in Adobe RGB, so I convert to sRGB before I attempt to save a file. As soon as I bring up the ‘save for web’ window, both the jpg preview and the ‘original’ image in that window appear washed out, as if I hadn’t converted to sRGB. This same thing happens when I open a standard RGB file without any conversions necessary. I’ve also tried ‘Save As’ and tried saving as jpg and gif. When saved, the images look washed out when I open them in Photoshop or any other app. I can’t figure out if there’s a setting I tweaked accidentally, or if I just need to re-install the application because of a bizarre glitch. Any thoughts?

Travis,

That is indicative of a less-than-perfect monitor profile. Run Adobe gamma and re-create a good monitor profile.

But the user has to turn color management on in IE for Mac, right? I mean, it isn’t turned on by default, is it?

I’m using the same profiles as always, but I ran through the gamma app just to make sure. I should add that I’m using 2 monitors and have the same problem on both. I may just have to re-install creative suite.

Travis,

Within Save for Web, the image is in Monitor RGB. It would seem that your Monitor RGB is distinctly different from sRGB, thus the difference. Now it is unusual for Monitor RGB to be widely different from sRGB…

I figured out what the problem was. It does seem to be a minor glitch. In the Edit > Color Settings panel, the ‘Desaturare Monitor Colors By:’ was unchecked, but the percentage was set to 20. It seems that it was applying this 20% saturation reduction even though the box wasn’t checked. I set this value down to 0, and now it’s working proberly. Thanks for your help everyone.
