I have recently installed photoshop cs on a high spec xp machine. When I open (or scan) an image for editing I find that some of the tools do not work – eg the paintbrush, pencil, rubber, cloning tool. I can change brush sizes and other options for each of the tools but when I try and use them they have no affect.

Other tools eg pen tool, selection tools, shape tools work fine.

I have restarted my computer, reinstalled the software and tried several images. No luck.

I don’t know if it is relevant but I also have a recently installed wacom tablet on my machine – which worked fine with a previous version of photoshop.

Please help!

Thanks

Jane

Strange, is your scratch disk on the same volume or physical drive? That may have something to do with it.

The first thing to try would be trashing your prefs. Details are in the FAQs.

But before you do, have you tried to use those tools with the Wacom? What type of files are they? What color mode? What color depth?

No. It wouldn’t.

Gabriel,

I’m sure you are posting here with the best of intentions.

However, it is fairly obvious that your knowledge of Photoshop (especially current and nearly current versions) is somewhat limited, and as a result you are giving out a lot of very bad information, which can be very confusing to folks seeking help and will do nothing for your reputation here.

I suggest that it would be politic of you to spend about three weeks reading questions and replies here without attempting to be helpful by replying to any of those questions. I’m sure that doing so will teach you a vast amount and maybe then you WILL be in a position to be able to help someone.

Until that time, prudence would be recommended.

You’re right about being somewhat limited. I’m rusty with Photoshop now because I have not been using it as much as I used to.

I sometimes use CS when I’m at my cousins house to help him with his projects but I’m not on it enough. I’ll take you’re advice and keep reading posts for a while and only respond to those questions I feel completely confident answering.

Thanks for the tip!

I had this problem a few months ago. (In fact I still get it). I found that with certain configurations, and using a Wacom, the mouse would not paint, clone or whatever but the pen would.

Have you tried the pen when the mouse moves but doesn’t paint?

What is Wacom?

John,

That pretty much confirms my suspicions and is why asked if the pen worked even if the mouse wouldn’t.

Is it intermittent? Have you tried trashing your prefs? Updating the Wacom drivers?

Jane, I don’t see how this could happen with several files but this is the identical problem you get when the image has a tiny selection or a hidden selection on it. Just my 2 cents. 🙂 Tom

Is it possible that you have pressure sensitivity activated for the wacom mouse? That way you get the movement with a pressure of zero – no effect.

Have a look into the wacom settings.

Thanks for all your replies. It would appear that in the end I just needed to restart my computer after reinstalling the software – all works OK today. Hopefully no more problems

Important Internet TIP # 2 for Gabriel:

"What is Wacom?"

Does your web browser support highlighting a term and automatically doing a web search for that term?

If it does, try it.

If it doesn’t, you ought to become good friends with Google <http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en>.

If you copy/paste "Wacom" into the Google search field you get a whole bargeload of links < http://www.google.com/search?as_q=Wacom&num=100&hl=e n&ie=ISO-8859-1&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&a s_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as _qdr=all&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i &as_sitesearch=&safe=off> pointing you in the right direction for your answer.
