when I start a new document, The foreground and backgorund colors are gey, and the name of th document says %grey

Hew do I get colors back. I tired deleteing all the settings and restarting but that didn’t help.

When you start a new document, read carefully what it says in the New Document dialog window. There is a place where it says "Color Mode: Grayscale." If you want color, change this to "Color Mode: RGB Color" or "Color Mode: CMYK Color" as appropriate.

Thanks that helped. It seems like the default shouldn’t be greyscale.

It isn’t. The default is RGB when you first install Photoshop. After that, the default is whatever is on the Clipboard if there is a picture on the Clipboard, or whatever you used the last time you used the New command otherwise.
