The contrast and texture of these images are very vivid, even harsh, with very black shadows and highlights that stop just short of being washed out. The effect is unusual because this vividness is combined with unsaturated colors, and more color than you might expect in the highlights, giving a hand tinted effect.

One way to accomplish this is to convert to Lab mode, and use the Lightness curve to get very vivid contrast. Flatten the a and b curves to near horizontal lines and you’ll get muted colors.

In RGB mode, this effect is more complex since ordinarily increased contrast results in more vivid colors. Dup the image to a new layer, and set its mode to Luminosity. Use curves to bump the contrast of the new layer, then use Hue/Sat on the original layer to mute the colors. The effect will be somewhat different than what you get in Lab, but you may like it better.

Keep in mind the person who made these images is experienced, and has done other things that are less obvious. The composition and lighting, for example, also contribute to the impact of these images.

Thank you very much for so deep advices. Big respect to your skills. I’ll be working on this color style 🙂

There is the draganizer action set, same idea but more dramatic. Examples: http://www.pbase.com/photofixer/draganizer_action

The action is quite extensive to follow and is concentric to involve a human face, or faces.

Available from Action Central: http://www.atncentral.com/
