Hello,

I once saw a very nice portrait that, at first, almost looked like a painting, but you could still tell it was a photograph.

I have a couple of nice B&W portraits that I was playing with to get the same affect (sketch or oil etc and blending with the original), but to no avail. Actually, my attempt looked pretty crappy.

Does anybody know of some tutorials in Photoshop CS or do I need to buy painterly software?

Thanks in advance, Steven

No need to purchase special software. CS can do it. Just look in the filters menu at the top of the screen. You can pick from many filters, including burlap and canvas. If you have preview checked in the dialog box, you can see the filter applied before you commit to it. Also, you can adjust the amount of effect of the filter on your work.

And don’t forget you can apply one filter over another!

you can also do a cool trick, in your LAYERS palette, duplicate the layer by dragging it to the DUPLICATE LAYER icon on bottom of layers palette, apply a filter or filters to THE DUPLICATE layer, add a mask to the duplicate layer by clicking on the MASK button on bottom of layers palette, INVERT THE MASK by hitting CTRL-I or COMMAND-I for Mac, then, making sure you have WHITE in your foreground color box in the toolbar, use a medium size brush and paint in the filter effect where you want it. Let me know if this is helpful for anyone out there>

We have about half a gig of discussion, examples and tutorials on this kind of thing. It’s spread throughout the site, but here is a good place to start:
