I have tried PS CS on three different computers, with Nvidia and ATI video cards, and I still get tool freeze after about 5 minutes. This makes CS unusable. Any ideas?

Oh yeah. All have the latest drivers from Nvidia and ATI.

now what’s common on all those? are they on the same network? all have the same software loaded? what?

if you want to be terse with the info this is going to take a while. if you gather your thoughts and supply all info you think someone NOT sitting at your systems might need THEN post, we might be able to help you a little faster. just a thought.

Well, I am not sure what you want. They are not all on the same network. Each has a legitimate version of CS loaded. Of course there are vast differences in other software on each machine. What software "might" interfere?

Maybe asking more specific questions? What might cause this type of behavior? Could it be video drivers? (I hardly think so.) Could it be fonts? Each machine has the same fonts. Could it be Eyecandy 4000? All three have that. Could this be a legitimate "bug?" Why would PS7 run fine on the same machines under the same conditions and yet CS not?

Does any of that help? If not, please be less terse in your questions.

What might cause it? Bad drivers, some utility programs, viruses/trojans/worms, cracked versions of the application, etc.

Ah, I see. So nobody knows. Well, there are no viruses or trojans on my machines. The drivers are the latest I could find. And PS CS is not cracked, they are legitimate copies. So what exactly is "etc."

If I knew, I’d let you know.

But there must be something in common among those 3 computers (drivers, other software, etc.) that is causing the problem.

(the installer might, but it does error checking when installing)

Well, CS is totally unusable as it is. I am very disappointed in this software.

John,

You won’t find a better resource for your problem than here. Read the splash screen when Photoshop loads – notice the name "Chris Cox".

Dave is the resident PC guru.

You’re getting good help, but as was said in Jerry McGuire "Help me help you".

PSCS is only totally unusable to you. That means you have a problem. You will get help here, but the first thing is to realize that you can’t post

"Tool Freezes, what’s wrong?"

and get an answer.

What tool? Can you make it happen? Have you tried eliminating potentially conflicting software from starting up? Does it freeze the minute you click on a tool, or after using it for a while? Have you tried turning video hardware accelleration to NONE to see if that changes the behavior?

Point is, be nice. This is the BEST place to get Adobe Engineer input and solve your problem, but the folks here are not Carnac – you have to provide more info.

Or not…

Peace,
Tony

All tools freeze after about 10 minutes. It is usually after applying text. It doesn’t matter which font. I have turned down the acceleration. What software is LIKELY to cause conflict? Could an existing PS 7.01 cause conflict? There is LOTS of software on the three systems. ALL three systems have the same fonts.

And I understand that CS is unusable to ME. Otherwise, there would be lots of complaints. And btw, I started out being nice…but I can be testy, too. So, any ideas?

Does it happen with the same font?

The trick is, if you want to call it that, is to MAKE it happen. Does it happen with any other tool or only the Text tool?

You say that it happens after about 10 minutes. Is that after 10 minutes of using the text tool, or is it about 10 minutes of editing before you use the text tool. I’m thinking that it’s possible to have a corrupted font – on all three machines? Maybe.

Also, have you tried resetting your preferences per the procedure in the FAQ?

In regards to software LIKELY to cause it, it’s too hard to tell. So the general troubleshooting procedure for software conflicts in the RUN section of the registry is to do the following:

Run MSCONFIG.

Disable half of the items that start with your machine, re-test for bad behavior. If it doesn’t go away, re-enable those, and disable the other half. If it goes away, re-enable half of those, and so on.

Peace,
Tony
