In some old photos on the internet, the black
& white prints come with the "clout
information (RGB)" attached.

Is it permissable to change this mode to
"greyscale" without losing any information?

You -=might=- achieve a better image if ou use just one or two channels before greyscaling.

Some scanners offer the use of the green channel when making ‘greyscale’.

Why they’re there? Just too lazy to set it to greyscale and save bandwidth, IMHO.
