Forgive me if this is more a MS Windows problem than a PS problem, but I hope there are some experts here that might be able to help.

I’m looking at a folder full of jpg files under Windows explorer. when I click on a thumbnail with the right mouse button, a menu drops down with the following items:

Open,
Edit,
Edit with Photoshop,
preview,
print,
open with >

….and a few others. My problem is that after I installed PS CS2, most of these menu items (Open, Edit, Edit with Photoshop, preview) all invoke Photoshop. Before I had PS installed, at least the "preview" function would invoke the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" – a little utility that I liked primarily because it performs well.

Questions:

1. how do I re-assign the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" to the preview function?

2. More generally, how do I assign specific DIFFERENT programs to the Open, Edit, and Preview context menu items?

Thanks
Greg

If you open a folder with various types of files in it, highlight a file, right click on the file, select properties, you then have the option to change the programme associated with that file (i.e.. which programme opens the file type!!)

Well, this is how to assign a program to the OPEN context menu item. In my case, this is Photoshop, and I’m happy with that.

Instead, I would like to change the program assigned to the EDIT and PREVIEW context menu items. How would I do that?

Found the answer. Do the following in Explorer:

– Click on Tools / Folder Options…
– Click on File Types tab
– Select a file type, say (for example) JPG
– Click on "Advanced"
– Select any context menu item, say (for example) "edit" – click on "edit" button to the right of the item list – enter the application call string for this context menu item. For the image viewer, this would be: "rundll32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1" (without the quotes).
– enter the application for this context menu item. For the image viewer, this would be
"shimgvw" (without the quotes).

Thanks for that Greg! Just tried that, changed the name of the programme used for editing to plain ‘CS2’ and it works perfectly!
