Open each image in turn and drag the layer from the image’s layer palette into the image window of the master file
Or, one-by one, in each of the 10 JPGs, Select All (CTRL + A); Copy (CTRL + C); then bring your Master document to the forefront, and Paste (CTRL + V). Each of those 10 JPG images will now occupy their own layers in your Master document.
This might be a good opportunity to get those much more efficient keyboard shortcuts firmly entrenched under your fingertips. And maybe, once you understand how efficient they are, you’ll be inspired to learn many more of them.
Trust us: Being able to drag-and-drop is a brilliantly human way of doing things, but the more esoteric shortcuts (and even the simple ones) are worth learning.
Hi Len thats what I needed to know. You’ll save me a bunch of time on copying and pasting.
Phosphor, I know the keyboard shortcuts, just that I always thought there would be a way where I could import a bunch a files into one the PSD, just by making a selection.
I can’t use copy and paste to its maximum at the moment as I have a problem with Photoshop taking forever to do simple things such as copy and paste (when any caching/memory usage is required.)
Which is really pissing me off at the moment.
My thread for that issue is here. Take a look and see if you have any suggestions. Rob Keijzer "Photoshop 7.0 Maximum Performance" 8/4/04 7:07am </cgi-bin/webx?50/0>!login=true
Guys also, I have got my images into my PSD, but they are not aligned straight. (images are out of canvas) I know that If I can get a selection around my image I can then hit the alignment buttons to bring it into correct align (to fit the PSD’s canvas size). How do I get a selection around the image even when it is off canvas (i need the selection around the entire image obviously)
Tim,
When dragging the layer hold the shift key down – that will centre the new layer in the existing canvas. (You can also drag a complete layer to any position with the Move tool – no need to select anything)
I understand you are under way with a solution to your question, but an alternative solution could be the Contact Sheet feature found under File>Automate>Contact Sheet II.
I use it often for down and dirty multiple file incorporation. I manipulate the paper size and file resolution and check off the flatten layers check box. It sometimes doesn’t fit the bill, but often it is perfect.

How big is your canvas? What Resolution?
If your pictures are straight from the camera they are too big, you should resize them, and make sure they are the same resolution as the canvas.
Do you need to do this more often? Then an action would be a good way to do this
