I bought a SanDisk Extreme III card on Ebay from a vendor in China. When the card failed
and I sent it back to SanDisk for lifetime warranty only to discover it was not a SanDisk product
and I am stuck with it.
The box and packaging looked liked the real thing

Hi,
You may want to go to: http://martybugs.net/articles/fakesandisk.cgi and read about this. I too bought some compact flash cards from Ebay a couple of years ago, but I’ve had no problems with them. These were the ordinary CF cards (512MB)..not Extreme 111. I didn’t know they were fake until I read about them on the internet. Funnily enough I recently went to a big photo store here in brisbane and looked at the Sandisks there. Some of them appeared to have a serial number that seemed suspect (according to the various websites on fake cards). When I asked about their supplier I was told that it’s a reputable supplier. I guess you need to check the serial numbers etc at the store before you buy. You can also contact Sandisk and have them verify the serial number on the card you are going to buy. You should also be able to get your money back from the Ebay seller by filing a complaint. Good luck.

You (and sandisk) should now be dealing with U.S. Customs! Importing knockoffs is a violation and the seller can (and should) be prosecuted.

BUT === if YOU don’t complain, nothing will happen.

That’s not a serial number but rather a batch number. I do have genuine Extreme III cards and they carry the same numbers on each. I think you would have to read the chips themselves to get the serial and maker of the actual chips.

There is also a very good article on ebay which notes the existence and identification of SanDisk cards.
