This one comes up from time to time – and as I’m just about to get a new computer, thought I’d see what folks think now. Lets say a budget of about US$3-4k excluding printer. (I’m in New Zealand, so that’s just a guesstimate).

Additional comments like ‘operating system should be on its own HD’ or ‘dual monitors a must’ would also be appreciated.

Your thoughts?

TIA

Ian

Hi there, Ian!
I’m definitely not a hardware person, but i know i love what i have, part of which is 3 monitors! If your monitor is good, you may want to consider getting another 2 of them.. or 3 that match if that is important and you can spare the cash. To run the 3 monitors, you will need a 3-head video card. Mine is the Matrox and it does what it needs to do.

Another thing that you must do, if you have not already, is to get a Wacom tablet. They have info on sizes and stuff at www.wacom.com. Bigger is not necessarily better.

I’ll let the others give you the "get all the RAM you can" advice. πŸ˜‰ Always me, Janee

And you either work for Intel or believe their propaganda. In fact, an Athlon 3200 is faster at present, and there will no doubt be speed improvements in the 64-bit chip they’ll have out soon. As for the Pentium range, you do know it’s going to die completely when Intel finally get round to producing their 64-bit chip don’t you? And that their 64-bit chip is incapable of utilising 32-bit software, unlike the AMD?

3-4k ? Do you intend to control the world from your desk? Only a Mac user would spend that much!
www.mwave.com see how much you can buy for much less than that. For $600 I bought a great MoBo, a fast chip and a gig and a half of fast RAM.

Hyper-Threading Technology exists… go do your
homework.

In fact, an Athlon 3200 is faster at present…
Who cares? I wasn’t talking about speed.

Thanks for the info Janee!
I was thinking 6 x 8, but it’s nice to hear
from an actual user. πŸ™‚

Hiya, Ric!
Well… if you don’t wanna move your arm too much, don’t go bigger than a 6 x 8. I am now using a 9 x 12 and am pretty close to concluding that it is overkill for my everyday work, though it is quite nice for drawing and other brush tasks. I am wondering if i can hook up both, actually.
I have worked with a Graphire (4 x 5) and a 6 x 8 and now this.. I like the 6 x 8 the best i think. I use my tablet in my lap. Nothing like a tablet. Drawing with a mouse is like drawing with a bar of soap! Always me, Janee

But doesn’t work. Photoshop is slower with HT enabled than with it disabled. Go check the tests.

Oh, but I was. The speed with which Photoshop and assorted plug ins are able to complete tasks.

Otherwsie you may as well go back to a 340DX.

Ian,

you did say "Dream," so I would take the 2 ghz, 64 bit Mac G5 maxed out to its 8 gigs of RAM capacity.

Your thoughts?

As a graphics editing system, you will want to focus on:

Monitor (19" or 21" CRT)
Memory & processor speed
Amount of memory (1 gigabyte or more)
Video card (128 megabyte ATI Radeon or other quality brand) Interface with your digital camera/film cards (Firewire or USB 2.0)

Of secondary importance will be the amount of storage (hard drive size) and archiving capabilities (CD-R and/or DVD-R).

Listen……………..

I am an OEM (Original Equipment maufacturer) of PC computers and if you are looking to purchase a new one. $3000.00 to $4000.00 is a bit over board.

For that amount of money I could build you a computer that would blow away any computer that you ever dreamed of.

If you are interested shoot me an email at
and let’s talk about this before you spend more money than you need to.
