Hi guys. A friend of mine is having a hard time finding a free Palatino font. Does anyone know of a site where I could find this for her? And possibly a free Helvetica as well?

That would be illegal.

You can get Helvetica with many Adobe products.

Book Antiqua, furnished with many MS products, is a pretty good knock-off of Palatino.

Palatino is a Trademark of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. This font is also known as Andover, Book Antiqua, CG Palacio, Calmont, Compano, Criteria, Elegante, Kartago, Malibu, Manuscript, Marathon, Michael, PA 10, PT, Padua, Pal, Paladium, Palangraphic, Palastar, Palatine, Palatum, Palazzo, Palermo, Palino, Palisade, Palladia, Palm Springs, Palmer, Palomar, Palton, Paltus Antiqua, Parlament, Pathway, Patina, Paxim, Photo Palamino, Plinius, Pontiac, Rico, Spalato, Valentino, Vevey, Zapf Calligraphic 801.

What would be illegal? There are tons of free fonts all over the ‘net. Do you mean that Helvetica (or) Palatino are copyrighted? If that’s the case, I was unaware. I guess I don’t understand how fonts are distributed, and which belong to who. So if Helvetica is copyrighted, who owns it? And how do so many sites, from the tackiest looking to the most elegant, have it for sale? I guess I am in need of Fonts 101…

They are intellectual property that somebody owns and sells. That’s how they stay in business. There are all sorts of knock-offs that you can use, without infringing on someone else’s rights.

I’d forgotten about Zapf Calligraphic. It’s by Bitstream, and furnished with many Corel products, including their $30 clip-art collections. It’s quite a good font (as are many of the 500 fonts you get in those Corel packages). Also in Corel packages is Swiss721, which is a good replacement for Helvetica.

Actually, it’s an excellent replacement. <g>

Adding to the other alternative that has already been pointed out, merchants can pay to distribute fonts just like they do other forms of software or intellectual property. There are half a dozen online music stores offering the same downloadable songs for sale. They all come from the same original source though.
