I have scanned some text documents and would like to know what is the best form to save the black and white images in so that the file sizes are minimized.

I was thinking perhaps a line art GIF file , or perhaps a greyscale jpeg . Any help appreciated

Personally, for b&w images, I’d suggest TIF, but those can be kind of big if they are at high resolution. You can minimize it if you use TIF with LZW compression. JPEGs make the image fuzzy because of the compression method, whereas TIF compression does not lose any info. If you want to save file size on the tifs, making them low resolution (72 dpi for example) is another way to go.

BUT, having said that, if you’re scanning docs that contain images, then you might want to look at creating PDFs out of the pages. These file sizes are very small and have the advantage of everything (text and pics) all in one conviently readable file.
