The dialog that opens RAW files (Nikon D1x) in Photoshop 7 has a simplistic interface with an ‘exposure’ slider, a white space pic list and a tick box for 10MP output. When I converted to v8 (Photoshop CS) I was pleasantly surprised to find a more sophisticated set of options with several tabbed screens of options and much more control of the image conversion.

Today, when I started up CS to work with some images I want to prepare, GONE was the nice interface that I’d come to love, and back is the old interface from v7. The machine has never had v7 installed. (Dual Xeon-2.8Ghz, 4GB RAM, WinDoze eXPee Pro).

How can I get back the better interface?

I forgot to mention that I’ve already re-installed CS and after that did not work, I reset the preferences via the Ctrl-Alt-Shift-OPEN (which also did NOT work).

OK, I found the solution, though I’m a bit mystified as to why this problem cropped up. I found advice to delete the "Nikon NEF plugin" and renamed it to ".old" and this brought back the dialog I was looking for.

Thanks for all your help 😉

Jack,

The dialog that opens RAW files (Nikon D1x) in Photoshop 7 has a simplistic interface with an ‘exposure’ slider, a white space pic list and a tick box for 10MP output.

That is Nikon NEF plug-in dialog.

When I converted to v8 (Photoshop CS) I was pleasantly surprised to find a more sophisticated set of options with several tabbed screens of options and much more control of the image conversion.

For better or worse (more options=more confusion) this is ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) plug-in.

They can’t both coexist. I don’t know why. It wouldn’t be a bad idea if we had a choice which plug-in to use opening RAW files.

I’m a bit mystified as to why this problem cropped up

Nikon Capture 4x and Nikon View 6x both install Nikon NEF plug-in file that overwrites ACR functionality. I don’t know any other way (short of copying “Nikon NEF Plugin.8Bi” into PS CS folder manually) for this to happen.

You already know how to correct this conflict.

Installing any updates to NC or NV may reinstall Nikon plug-in so you would have to remove it again.

So far, I’ve found that the ACR plug-in resulted in ‘fuzzy’ images with poor depth… I prefer the Nikon plug-in for D1x NEF files… jpegs are fine… I’m talking D1x NEF’s only… but that’s primarily what I work with… still doing more tests though….
