That’s not a problem … it’s a "feature" of Windows XP!

Keeps you from spending thousands of hours trying to figure out how to get PS to do exactly what you want (see my active thread regarding problems I’m having trying to batch save TIFF files via an Action)

If only my pc shutdown every time I started PS I could have saved myself untold hours of aggravation .. must have different XP Service Pack installed than you as PS doesn’t shut me down.

kresner, i’m not sure what you’re talking about.

shifter, go into control panel> system> advanced> startup and recovery> settings and uncheck "automatically restart" on system failure. if it blue screens after that, you have a driver error that can usually be fixed by updating a non-compliant or buggy driver (video, sound, printer, etc), if it STILL restarts, you have a hardware problem.

As Dave says, a hardware problem is very likely. Can you post your EXACT system specs?

in that post of Chis Cox’s… he mentioned something about MMXCore and FastCore. anybody have any idea how i would go about shutting them down? i know its not a solution to the problem but, maybe it would let me get SOME work done… (im kind of falling behind, lol 🙁 … )

Rename the Plugins\Extensions folder to ~Extensions. That’s all you need to do to disable the MMXCore and Fastcore 8bx plugins.

thanx len… but, its still shutting down a few minutes after starting PS:(… i just got off the horn with HP. they are going to take a look at it. the guy on the phone said they will most likely be swapping out the mainboard for another that seems to be stable while PS is running.(personally i think the guy didnt know his way out of a wet paper bag but, thats just my opinion)…

looks like ill be without my laptop for a few weeks. ill just have to dump my work on someone else. hehehe… i could use a few weeks of downtime anyways…

ill let you all know how it goes…

thanx again

"System Model: Hewlett-Packard Pavilion zd7000 (DM788A#ABA) Rev 1"

Sigh.

There’s another thread going about the zd7000 – it is a hardware defect and HP still has not released a public statement.

hey Chris,

just got my laptop back from HP. they say in the repair order that the "problem was duplicated". yet, all that they replaced was the power jack for the AC outlet.

while my computer was in for repairs, i had called HP to inquire the status of my mainboard replacement. they said that they had NEVER heard of/about my particular issue.

am going to try sending it BACK in for replacement of the mainboard in a day or so.

what if anything can i do to make them see that they know about this issue?

Shifter,

Since your system appears to be under warranty, stick with it.

For what it’s worth, I recently developed a whole host of problems on my son’s PC but it wasnt’t limited to Photoshop. It all started with a power supply that suddenly went kaput. I replaced the power supply (happened to have a spare) and it worked for a few minutes but then I started with the computer rebooting over and over. I could not boot from the Windows XP emergency startup disk nor from the Windows XP CD. I kept getting error messages that one of the setup files on the CD was corrupted. After hours of agonizing over it, it dawned on me to test my memory with MemTest (DOS version) and that identified serious memory problems. I have to assume that when the power supply went bad it zapped my memory. By trial and error, I replaced memory sticks two at a time until I found the bad stick. No problems since.

Based on my experience, I doubt if your problem is with the motherboard but, of course, it could be. Instead, I would suspect the power supply and/or memory and possibly the power cord itself.
HP should know enough to check these items if they have not already done so.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Tony. I knew that my specifics probably did not apply to Shifter (his problem appears to be specific to the HP 7000)but was just posting for general information. When your system starts crapping out, it helps to know what might be causing it BEFORE you get to the point where you can’t access the internet or anything else.
Besides, from Shifter’s latest posting, it was obvious HP had NOT fixed his problem.

well, after talking with the HP tech who ACTUALLY did the work on my computer, we have determined that the problem may actually be the RAM.

have just gotten off the phone with the company that made my RAM. (Centon)… they, much more than HP, were very helpful. the tech i talked with explained to me that, while the problem MAY still be with the mainboard, most "off the shelf" RAM is only loosely "speced". the reason for this is so the RAM can used used on many different mainboards.

anyway, the tech at Centon said he would get a hold of HP and custom build me a chip that is more tightly "speced" for my mainboard. all free of charge! (their products have an (unconditional?)lifetime warranty as i understand it). and i get to keep the original chip. i think I’ll sell it on-line somewhere…

we’ll see how it turns out. i’ll update when the chip comes in.

lol… "chip (ship) comes in." …hehehe

Shifter – see the existing thread about the HP zd7000, and the FAQ topic about it.

It’s a problem on the motherboard.

I’ve seen it Chris. (I think I’ve linked to it in a previous post in this same thread). I’ve have told HP about it as well. they insist that they have NOT heard anything of the problem with the mainboard not handling PS7. I’m going to give the RAM swap-out a try. If it still has the same problem I am going to send the computer in, yet again, to HP. Only this time I am going to insist that they replace the mainboard.

Question for you Chris…

If, after I try the RAM change, HP still insists that this is not a mainboard problem, would it be possible that I might be able to have you "fight on my side" regarding the issue?

I’m not sure exactly, but maybe you could get in contact with the tech that is working on my machine or something along those lines? I’ve tried having them go to the thread that you have posted about the 7000 series problem but, either they are ignoring my suggestion to look at the thread or they think I don’t have a clue about my machine and its problems…

In the end, I look at it like this…
1) The thread you posted about the mainboard states that HP is now shipping all new 7000 series units with this mainboard fix.

2) If HP knows about this problem in the first place, why haven’t they passed this information on to their employees?

3) Regardless of weather or not the techs doing the work on the machine know of the problem, why can’t they just take the customers (MY) word for it that "this" or "that" is the problem and fix it? I mean, come on, my machine is IN WARRANTY. a new mainboard can’t be (when it comes down to "nuts & bolts") all that expensive to produce.

I dunno, maybe in just getting too worked up over all this, but when someone spends $2000 for a computer and about half that much for a piece of software to run on that computer, one should be expecting the manufacturer (in this case HP) to bend over backwards to fix a problem for its customers. I cannot see why HP would be hesitant to satisfy one of its customers, especially when the product is IN WARRANTY…

I look forward to hearing from you Chris, and thanx for the help/info thus far…

my bad Chris…

thought you were referring to the following thread…

Chris Cox "Computer locks up, shuts down, or reboots while running Photoshop" 2/11/02 7:45pm </cgi-bin/webx?50/0>

have since found the correct one. (the one with over 300 posts?).

LenHewitt "CS turns off my comp; Windows XP" 3/17/04 3:22pm </cgi-bin/webx?14/0>

is the first link the one you are referring to as the FAQ? or, is there another i haven’t found floating around?..

There’s another…

J.A. White "CS turns off my comp; Windows XP" 8/19/04 2:03pm </cgi-bin/webx?14/317>

The problem started in like… May? and it has taken this long to get HP to deal.

Shifter, an experiment:
Is your 2G RAM 4 x 512M ?

If yes, take out one (leaving 1.5G) and try again.

If the machine works fine now, might also be BIOS that can’t handle either 2 Gig or 4 modules.

Had this issue with a Chaintech MB.

Rob – no, there is a known issue with the zd7000 hardware, as explained in the FAQ.

well Chris,
I just got my machine back from HP. So far so good. When I had sent it in the first time they said it was a RAM prob. So I put the original RAM back in it. It worked for all of two hours then, wham! Same thing starts happening…

Anyway, this go round, I’ve had PS running for going on four hours. No problems thus far.

If anyone reading this thread has the same laptop I do, and HP is telling you that they know of no such issue… All i can say to you is INSIST that they replace your mainboard. And, DO NOT send your hard drive along with your machine for servicing a hardware problem. (especially if its going to HPs service center here in CA). I had one of their techs delete my WinXP user account and put his own on here. He had my machine so locked up that I couldn’t even download updates for my AV software! and worse yet, I couldn’t access System Restore to get rid of his user account! It was only after SEVERAL hours of trying to hack his user accts p/w (i wont go into how i got it) that i was finally able to "unhide" and restore my own user account…

I’ll tell ya, this is the last HP product i buy.

well ill stop ranting now,

thanx again all!
