Hi Group,
I’m having a problem with PS CS1. Whenever I try to open a Jpeg or Gif file on my system I get the error message
" Cannot complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." I can create a new document in PS and save it as a Jpeg or Gif and then reopen it. Any ideas on solving this would be appreciated. Bob Hansen

Might possibly help if you delete your preferences file and then re-open PS

If, for instance you would try to open a .rif (painter) file in Photoshop, you’ll get a message that ‘it is not the right kind of document.’

You are simply trying to open a extension in PS that can not be read by it.

sorry, by reading it again, I see that you are talking about jpeg or gif. Then it may well be the preferences, and
top posting keep on being stupid.

Well, thanks for your replies. I did more research and found that the problem is with my file and folder hierarchy. PS will not open any image file in the my documents folder or its sub folders. But it will open images from the source folder. That is C:/documents and settings/my user name/my documents. So, it’s not a problem with PS. Sorry to bother you before I did more reserch.

If you’re using XP Windoze, alter your directory permissions for ‘my documents’ – you’ll have to be in admin mode.

Make sure you don’t have a folder named "Desktop" on your Desktop. Caused me all kinds of trouble…
