Marcin,

What you describe is a vignette
How familar are you with photoshop?

1 Open your image and copy the layer. (ctrl+j)
2 Fill your background layer with your colour of choice. 3 Make a selection with the marquee tool set to an oval and a feathering of 20-40 (on the Options bar)depending on resolution, on your copied layer (top layer active)
4 Apply a layer mask to this layer, the rectangle with a circle in it at the bottom of the layers palette.
5 Et Voila!

You should be able to come up with 1001+ different ways to make those blur

– (1) Create a blank layer (2) using Paint Brush to paint to whatever color you want (100% opacity at the edge and lower in the middle)

– (1) Create a blank layer (2) fill with whatever color you want (3) using Erase tool on the central (adjust the opacity as needed).

– (1) Create a blank layer (2) fill with whatever color you want (3) Click on the Quick Mask (4) Paint BLACK to bring up the image from lower layer, WHITE to do the opposite

and many many similar…

Well, I am a photographer and I often have to chose sharpness over some others <g> then I let Photoshop handles all the blurry stuff (if needed).

That’s my style of photography! I spend good money on good lens to take as sharpest as possible for small detail, then I can use Photoshop skill (or technique) to soften later if needed.

This is called a "vignette."

The easiest way to do this is to make a selection in your image, feather the selection, and save the selection as a layer mask. Photoshop also has a Vignette action built-in, though it does not create oval vignettes.
