Hi all!

I am new to newsgroups but been lurking for while now. I am a photographer and I’ve been using P.S. quite successfully for several years now. I’m currently using CS2.

I’ve used P.S. on several computers and have always had the problem of my settings or preferences getting wiped out. The most frequent problem is that the PS window starts small, with all the tools at regular size & locations. I know it’s just a matter of re-sizing the window, but this should not be happening and I wonder what else might be going on in the background. Occasionally, PS starts up completely discarding my preferences and the intro window shows up listing what’s new in CS2. Of course, at that point I have to go in and re-set everything.

I used to build my own computers but recently started using off the shelf and adding my own memory and other internals (hard drives, additional USB ports, etc.). I’m presently using an HP built computer. Here is a look at some of my system info:

Adobe Photoshop Version: 9.0.2 (9.0.2×296)
Operating System: Windows XP
Version: 5.1 Service Pack 2
Physical processor count: 1
Logical processor count: 2
Processor speed: 2800 MHz
Built-in memory: 1014 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 900 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 75 %
Image cache levels: 6
Photoshop scratch has async I/O enabled
Scratch volume(s):
H:\, 4.27G, 2.30G free
Startup, 224.9G, 189.2G free
Primary Plug-ins folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\
Additional Plug-ins folder: not set
Installed plug-ins: ABOUT 118 – IS THIS DETRIMENTAL?
Plug-ins that failed to load: NONE

Installed TWAIN devices:
WIA-EPSON Stylus CX4700/CX4800
EPSON Stylus CX4700/CX4800

Any thoughts are appreciated!

One thing you should make sure you are doing is quitting out of Photoshop before shutting down. That is the most common cause of Prefs being reset unintended.

Another thing you can do is make a copy of the Prefs file you have and stash it somewhere. Then, if Prefs are reset or if things go wacky you can just Copy/Paste the "clean" Prefs into the right folder in Documents and Settings. Then you won’t have to mess with settings, though it will mess up your Recently Opened list.

Sometimes it starts small for me too. Don’t know what exactly is going on there. You can set it by right-clicking on the Shortcut icon but even then, it doesn’t always take.

It would seem from the number of complaints about
and fixes repaired by using the default preferences file and the fact it has been messed up in so many versions of PS and so many of us have experienced this
(It is the MOST frequent fix given on this forum (and the caps lock to change the brush cursor maybe a tie?)

indicates to me a design flaw in the software
or some inherent problem with the way it works (or not)
and not anything in your comp config
one problem I see is that if you have moved files or drives from recently used list …it will mess up

it is less serious but no less annoying than having to re-install I have not seen the behaviour you describe though
a re-set to default prefs on start up

most of us have had to resort to it at one time or other to fix problems as edgh said it is easy enough to make a backup of it
and if you keep a lot of custom settings it is well worth the time to do that

make sure you are not pressing the keyboard 3 finger salute when you start PS as that is the way it sets it back by design

do you need all those plug ins?? all the time??
why not just load them as necessary?? your program will start up faster. same for lot of fonts, you have to wait to load them all on the splash.
