I found this interesting link in a finnish forum. The maker of this page has made a few comparisons between Photoshop 7’s and PhotoFiltre’s jpeg compression. Those who are not aware of PhotoFiltre it is a little and quite capable image editor (freeware). It is not by any means as professional as the PS is.

The interesting point is that PS seems to make much more jpeg artefacts than PF when used suchlike compression level – at least when it comes to file size.

The page is in finnish but I think You’ll understand the results when You know that finnish word ‘pakkaustasolla’ is something like ‘using compression level’.

Did they save from Photoshop, or SaveForWeb?

Photoshop includes metadata (IPTC, XMP, EXIF, Profiles, etc). If you want the smallest size you use SaveForWeb, because it does not include metadata.

Also, there is no standardization of what the compression level means in JPEG. 50 in Photoshop could be the same as 20 in another app, and 80 in yet another.

Photoshop’s JPEG compressor is designed for maximum quality at a given compression level. And it compares well with every other JPEG compressor available (I haven’t seen anything that can do more then 10% better).

"Did they save from Photoshop, or SaveForWeb?"

I understood that saving was made from Photoshop.

"Photoshop includes metadata (IPTC, XMP, EXIF, Profiles, etc). If you want the smallest size you use SaveForWeb, because it does not include metadata."

I have not checked that by myself but I do not know if PhotoFiltre includes some metadata as well.

"Also, there is no standardization of what the compression level means in JPEG. 50 in Photoshop could be the same as 20 in another app, and 80 in yet another."

Yes, I know that but I meant that the jpeg compressed file size is quite equal.

If the file sizes are equal, the SaveForWeb should be very, very similar in quality (because there is only so much you can do with JPEG).

This sounds like they were very unclear on what they are comparing.

Yes, You were absolutely right.

I was so interested in this matter that I had to install PhotoFiltre to my notebook. I took a pair of quite good quality images and compressed them very heavily (approximately to a same file size). I used PS’s SaveForWeb (I have version 6.01).

I think the result pictures (compressed by Photoshop and PhotoFiltre) are quite alike. To be exact it seems to me that Photoshop does actually a bit better quality picture (differences were not very big).
