Several days ago? I see it posted yesterday.

Anyway, you can’t have the background removed on a jpg image. Jpg does not support transparency. Something else like gif or png might be in order.

The group is not unfriendly. Some individuals may be unfriendly, some friendly and some indifferent.

Hi.

It is not always friendly, but most of the time it is helpfull.

You were not asking for help, you were asking for someone to do it for you. That is quite a different situation.

You do not seem to be using Photoshop, but some other program, and I have never heard of it, much less know how it works.

So it is hardly surprising you did not get a response from this Photoshop group.

Did you offer reasonable monetory compensation for your graphics request or did you expect people to just work for free?

Posts before and after mine received countless responses and mine was just skipped over.

Perhaps that’s because you’re new and your first post was asking for free graphics work?

That’s too bad, as it seems you discuss many interesting things here.

WebTV should never have been let outside the confines of their own private newsgroups.

Thanks anyway.

Hello Arthur
saw and read your post was not interested in the job, or backgammon for future
make your post topic more specific
and on topic: the topic is PhotoShop
if you asked how to make your circles in Photoshop we might have helped tell you how
but do it for you??
I would not (someone here may have, I have seen it before.) try :looking for artist to design game pieces

DID you expect us to volunteer? for free? to your project?? you expected friendly?? on NG??? hehehehehehehhehhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeee puleeeze
if you need to hire someone one…………… the freelance employment sites are a better bet
I charge $50.00 an hour for artwork…the Indians will do it for $10

pouting is unmanly
and very unattractive
I am sure you did not mean to offend BUT

we get requests to work for no money a LOT, which is insulting and disrespectful to people who have devoted their lives to becoming graphic artists, trained and studied and make a living at it.
while we are not adverse to sharing ideas and techniques we do not respond well to that I’m afraid…..would you??

so now you know about how I would have answered your post wouldn’t you rather have been ignored?

AND you don’t even KNOW what you need
you are asking for jpeg format >>>>>it does not support transparency of no background, so that’s why you can’t make that work
then you ask for photos!!! also unworkable to your task

do some research on transparent objects first
a transparent circle is most likely available as a ready made clip art

Even though I’m a Web TV user, I’ve begun the ambitious project of starting my own Backgammon Website.

I’m at a point where I need the graphics of just the pieces that you’ll find on the link below.

Just 1 Red piece and 1 White piece. They have to be the same size with the entire background colors removed.

What I"m hoping to end up with are two jpg photos of each piece that maintains their size, boarders and colors.

My own attempts at trying to do this myself at IMAGEMAGICK hasn’t worked out at all unfortunately.

If anyone would be nice enough to send me the photos as I’ve outlined above, I’d be more than glad to send you the link to the Backgammon site once it’s done.

I think you’ll be surprised to find what can be accomplished without even a hard drive to work with.

It would really be appreciated and help me on my way to finishing this project soon.

As far as my comments about this being an unfriendly group, I’ll let some of the quotes I receive speak for themselves.

"WebTV should never have been let outside the confines of their own private newsgroups."

I’ll concede I may have posted to the incorrect group. My assumption was that a discussion group on Graphics would know how to solve my problem.

As far as Web TV goes, I know it doesn’t compare to a computer that runs photoshop. In any case, it allows me and my family to get online and enjoy many of the wonderful things the internet has to offer.

It’s true that .jpg photos don’t support transparency, but you’ll note that the photo on the link I had provided was in the .gif format, which does support transparency.

http://community.webtv.net/ImaxUncut/board

I’m surprised that some didn’t know what IMAGEMAGICK was or how to use.

I have to imagine it’s probably has many of the same features as Photoshop.

All I actually needed was to know how to eliminate the entire background on the photos provided in the link. It’s unfortunate that so many took the time to criticize rather than provide actual help.

Although I didn’t receive the graphics help here I had been looking for, I’ll provide the link to IMAGEMAGICK below, in case it may be of help to anyone with their graphics work.

Here it is and it’s free of charge.

If you’re going to get serious about editing bitmaps. Get photoshop. If you’re going to keep using webTV and freeware, at least realise you’ll always be shunned in the
community of photoshop and count yourself lucky you get an asnwer to your completely newbie question.
It’s not that bad of a trade off. Get in, get what you need from the pros and get out, realise your fodder in this world and sleep anyways at night.

I think the problem was that you didn;t ask for help or advice. You asked people to do the work for you, and all you offered in return was a link to your website so we could go and see our work published on the web. Stop me if I’m missing the point here, but what’s the incentive for people to give up their own time and do your work for you?

Here it is and it’s free of charge.

http://magick.net4tv.com

Good luck with all your future Graphics Projects.

Regards

Sorry Arthur,

Had you asked how to accomplish the task in Photoshop, I know that several folk would have lept to the fore and given you a hand. Many of us are professionals with heavy work loads. We spend a bit of spare time here, trying to either share info, or solve problems regarding Photoshop. Actually, most of the group is quite friendly, given the right situations.

I’m sorry that you did not get the response, that you sought. If you were using Elements, or Photoshop, I’d have helped you out, as, I’m sure, would several others. As for the capabilities of ImageMagick, I cannot comment. I do not have the time to d-l it, and play with it, to see what it can, and cannot do, sorry.

In most image manipulation programs, one can create a "Mask" to eliminate an area of the image. Some programs do a better, albeit more complicated, job of this. Yes, GIF can handle transparency.

I wish that I had a more appropriate NG to point you to, but I do not. Again, sorry.

It seems to me that Voivod thinks a lot of itself. Much more that other people think of it, to be sure. There is no disrespect in someone asking for help, money or free goods and services. Where the disrespect comes into it is when people who think everything in the world has a price, start to peddle their views and demonstrate this is indeed, a very unfriendly group here.

This particular case was a bit more involved than that, since the person asked for something for free, then got angry because he was ignored. May as well stick your head through the pit throwing hole at the carnival. Those of us with custard pies handy couldn’t resist – I mean come on!

But your broader point regarding unfriendliness is valid. It can be a cruel place, indeed. It’s very human and I think it’s necessary to accept this in a group like this one, which has been operating for decades with no regulation other than what we manage for ourselves. This is like my gym class in high school. Some folks get along fine with the group, others just always seem to be the butt of all the jokes, and getting their rears snapped with towels to howls of laughter from the group at large. We’ve really come a very little way from the time when we were children, and unnecessarily cruel to one another.

It is generally unwise, I’ve found, to directly confront people like Vovoid. Rather, use humor to deflect such people, or simply ignore their poor behavior in hopes that better behavior will appear. It generally does and Vovoid is no exception in that he has a good side in addition to the nasty one. With time, a willingness to help others as well as take some lumps, I believe anyone (who wants) can earn a place here. But you gotta expect to take the lumps first to earn your place.

That sir is a fair and valid post. I doff my hat.

I fully agree that no everything in life is free, my problem is the response instead of explaining to a `self confessed` newbie a more un-friendly approach was taken instead of educating.

Right, it’s bullying to explain to the imbeciles who can’t follow a thread that the words they think are mine and the flames they’re directing at me should be given to someone else. Perhaps you roll over and play dead in such situations but I for one won’t stand for people misquoting and attributing words to myself that aren’t mine.

Doug, scorewise – and I realize you may not really be competing here – you get 3 points for irony, and another 2 points for paranoia inducing phraseology. 5 total out of a possible 10. For full credit, try to adopt the style I’m recommending. Let go of your earthly desires, and deflect instead of confronting. It’s a Zen thing. Empty your mind of all conflict. There is still a serious tone to your note that provides a big wide target for Vovoid.

BTW – far from disapproving of Vovoid, I’d like to thank him for the time he has offered us in providing a foil for our responses. It is far from easy to get all that steam up and insult people over and over, particularly when they are not being cooperative. Thanks Vovoid.

Who’s this we you think you speak for?

I believe that she is speaking for the collective of paid professionals, who spend their time and efforts in this NG, and I think that she did a good job of it. Does/did she speak for ALL subscribers? No. She spoke for the
employeed
professional designers, artists, photographers and such here.

She didn’t speak for me. You may feel comfortable allowing somone else to speak for you but I don’t.

That is your choice. I do not feel that she intended to speak for ALL of the subscribers to this NG, just those Photoshop professionals, who frequent here. If I missed her subtext on the inclusion of you, or some others, please pardon my mistake.

There exists an absolute right in these groups for everyone to have their say. Voivod has the same right as you do to say whatever it pleases without censure by wannbe authoritarians… I may not like what it says, but I’ll sure as hell support it’s right to say it.

Surely if you give Vovoid the right to say whatever he/she wants, you must equally give the right to others to comment
on his/her posts, even of their replies may appear censurious?

I don’t disagree. I have had a hard time from ignorant people with little or no respect for others myself. I don’t like what they said – even to the point of suing one when I find out his identity but I still support their right to participate and say what they wish, as wrong and offensive as it may be.

It is their responsibility alone to decide if they are willing to accept the consequences of what they say… Not you or anyone else. If Voivod wants to write a post with profanities in it, it needs to decide for itself if the consequences of doing that (reduced audience due to killfiles, perhaps) are acceptable to it.

Let me tell you that voivod telling me or you something and using profanities to reinforce it’s effect is mild compared to someone posting lies and defamation about you, your family and your business whilst hiding their identity to do it or worse, impersonating someone else.

This is not signalling my acceptance of bad behaviour. Voivod is appallingly bad. I support everyone’s right to do that should they choose to. You may have noticed that not a lot of people have decided to copy Voivod’s style? Obviously it’s appeal is only to Voivod. How much water can you pour into a one litre bottle before it outlives it’s usefulness? Same with Voivod… Eventually it’s audience will be so small, it will discover profanity has a limited effect.

I’m sure people here do. Why should anyone do it for free?
As far as Web TV goes, I know it doesn’t compare to a computer that runs photoshop. In any case, it allows me and my family to get online and enjoy many of the wonderful things the internet has to offer.

So, go enjoy them. Bye!

It’s true that .jpg photos don’t support transparency, but you’ll note that the photo on the link I had provided was in the .gif format, which does support transparency.

I’m surprised that some didn’t know what IMAGEMAGICK was or how to use.

Why would people who are using a high end graphics program bother with some cut rate shareware garbage/web application?

I have to imagine it’s probably has many of the same features as Photoshop.

<snicker> You really are an idiot, aren’t you?

All I actually needed was to know how to eliminate the entire background on the photos provided in the link. It’s unfortunate that so many took the time to criticize rather than provide actual help.

It’s unfortunate you didn’t offer to pay the professionals to do the job you requested and expected people to just LEAP to help some clueless newb with some moronic project.

Although I didn’t receive the graphics help here I had been looking for, I’ll provide the link to IMAGEMAGICK below, in case it may be of help to anyone with their graphics work.

Again, $600 graphics package > web based crapware.

Here it is and it’s free of charge.
