I am stacking multiple digital long exposure images, and somehow I’d like to be able to average them all with a full dynamic range. Screen mode layer blending doesn’t quite do that. For example, think of 10 identical images (layers. When I average them all, I still have the same image. With screen mode, I have a bright clipped mess. If I reduce the brightness of all 10 images to 1/10th then I won’t get clipping of the whites, but I lose all sorts of low end information. There are some programs out there to do this, but they don’t allow for re-registration of the images.

The answer is probably right in front of my face, but you know how it goes with photoshop.

Thanks,

me

You want normal blend mode with varying opacities for the layers.

Starting from the bottom most layer (call it layer 1) the opacity should be (100 / Layer#)

Two layers would be (bottom up): 100%, 50%
Three layers would be: 100%, 50%, 33%
Four layers would be: 100%, 50%, 33%, 25%
