Hi all,

Am struggling to learn clipping paths. While making a circle I find that the upper and lower portions of the circle seem to come to tiny points that I find bothersome… I’ve done it and redone it but it turns out the same… I’ve zoomed in as far as I can, made guide lines, used the grid, and had the snap to set to grid and guide lines…

See this example:
http://membership.goldenmoon.org/agg/sgm_moon/SGMmoon1.jpg

Is it just my imagination perhaps? It just doesn’t seem perfectly round to me…

Another problem I’ve identified is how the image isn’t smooth towards the left bottom of the moon at about the 7 o’clock region…. I know its got to be how I did the path…

I first did a circle within a circle then did the moon face… After I finished the moon face I went around the back part of the moon to close the clipping path… How does one join one clipping path to another?

If you download this image:
http://membership.goldenmoon.org/agg/sgm_moon/splashmoon_cli ppath.jpg you will see my clipping paths… I know it’s messy…

Could someone point me in the right direction? I’m horrible at making the nice little curved lines so I cheated with the moon and just made a bunch of clip points while zoomed in…

Also, I’ve used these tutorials in learning this technique: http://www.istockphoto.com/article_view.php?ID=89
http://www.elated.com/articles/paths-and-the-pen-tool/
This one I found really helpful for making the circle:

I’m using CS2…

Many thanks,
Babs

Babs,

It’s just question of practice, the pen tool can be difficult to master.

You might consider using the Shapes tool set to Paths for something like this. You can use Transform to line it up correctly with the image.

Thank-you for the links… I haven’t been using my pen (I have a wacom), I need to practice A LOT more with that thing yet as well! But I’m checking out the tutorials…

No, the Shapes Tool, but it(they) shares the Palette space with Custom Shapes. Rectangle, Ellipse, etc. Click on it and they fly out.

You can have them as paths only by clicking on the middle icon on the left side of the Options Bar.
