Computer shut-down.

Hi,
Having used PS7 on this machine for many years without a single hitch, I now find on my new laptop that when I open certain image files in PS7, that the computer instantly shuts down and then proceeds to re-start.

The only reference to such happenings I can find relate to insufficient memory. The laptop has 2Gb of RAM with a 100gig hdd, and I havent altered the page file.

Please can anyone help?

Hi Steve.

Out of memory will give you an error rather than crashing.

I’m assuming you’re running windows. If you are running win2K or later, start by looking at the system Event Log. There may be a clue there. If that does not show you the problem, download the memory diagnostic from http://memtest86.com/ and run it for at least one full pass.

It does sound like a memory problem to me also, bad dimm most likely.

What you describe is usually hardware or driver related try disabling hardware acceleration
Display properties>settings >advanced>troubleshoot. If this works you could have video driver issues.

How much free space on your h/d? You should never let the h/d exceed 85% of undefragged space.

Besides the advice that you have gotten so far, give us a bit more detail on your system. By this, I mean the setup for Scratch Disk (PS), PageFile (OS), available free space on your 100GB HDD, OS and version, vid-card and drivers, size of files that you’re working on, etc.

Just thinking, while you post these specs., when did you last de-frag the HDD?

In general, I’m with both Mike and Toobi in that I’d suspect a bad DIMM, or then something in the BIOS chain. Video is a tad less likely with PS, than, say a NLE video program, but a bad driver can still shut down the system. Event Viewer should give you a clue. Look in both Applications and System. Any error messages? Let’s hope so. I’ve had systemic shutdowns, or apps shutdowns without ONE error. That sucks!

Let us know more and do look into the previous suggestions.

You don’t state your OS, but XP and 2000 by default will restart upon a severe error. You can disable the auto restart:

right click on MY COMPUTER and click on Properties. Click on the ADVANCED TAB, and select STARTUP AND RECOVERY button. You’ll notice a checkbox that says "automatically restart" upon a system failure. Uncheck this.

The next time it happens, it’ll throw a blue screen with information on what failed instead of automatically restarting.

Thank you all for your suggestions, I appreciate it.
I have been really busy in work for the last few days, so will try all of them out tonight!

There is loads of space on the Hdd, and it doesn’t need defragging, as the machine is only a few months old, and I haven’t been using much of it, or installing any subsequent deleted programs on.
The files I am opening are not that big by today’s standards just a few Mb’s!
The page file is set to auto, and that’s about all I can remember now, I’ll fire it up in a mo, and see what I can find.
