I am having Windows XP Home Edition installed my Laptop (Acer Aspire 1356LCi) and Adobe Photoshop 6.01.

A couple of days I installed XP SP2 (final) and everything runs quite smoothly: no problem whatsoever. But one problem occurred when starting PS 6.01: It starts remarkably slower than with XP SP1 and furthermore opening picture (normal jpg or tiff format sized around 1MB) is also remarkably slower.

I have not measured the difference between those times but as I said they are very well noticeable. Actually I could measure the time because I still have disk images both XP with SP1 and SP2. Both installs are other ways exactly similar.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

I have recreated PS’s preferences – no help.

Most likely SP2 updated a driver, and that driver is slower.

I have tried a few things but nothing seems to help.

ImageReady works as quick as with sp1. I have defragged my drives.

First hang occurs right when clicked the PS’s shortcut: program opens with the grey background and then very long wait for the splash screen. Secondly when I open a image file (no matter tiff or jpeg format) sized about 1.5MB it takes very long time to open the image.

I am having 512MB RAM. I know it could be better with some more but this computer and Photoshop works quickly enough for me with XPSP1.

I have also reinstalled the PS but that did not help me either.

I installed PS version 7 and it did not slow down after installing XPSP2. Also other bigger applications (for instance Macromedia Dreamweaver MX2004) work OK with SP2.

I am beginning to be desparate because I do not have money to upgrade my licenced Photoshop 6 version to a newer one and furthermore I don’t actually need those new features that newer versions (7 and CS) offer.

My guess would be a printer driver that’s slowed down, or the printer is missing.

Thank You mr. Chris Cox very much. That was the solution.

I have used a printer via a networked workstation. I found in Windows printer settings section that there were two networked printers ‘installed’ though I have never used but this one particular printer. So I deleted the other one that Windows has installed and that is it: now PS starts and works like it always has.
