I’ve got lots of photos of someone with their face painted red, wearing a bright blue t-shirt. I need to turn the shirt red too. I’ve tried several ways, but whichever way I try, I’m left with a fuzzy green line between the red face and the colored t-shirt.

Is there any way I can get rid of this? I’m using photoshop 7. since I have about 20 images to do, I preferably need something quick. please help!

Can you post a link to one of the pics?

Elle,

As Glen said, an image will help. The issue is that there are a boatload of ways to do it, none of them quick and easy (usually) depending on the composition of the image.

In general, it involves being able to mask out that which you don’t want changed. Sometimes feathering is helpful, sometimes not. It depends on the image.

This is a daunting task for a lot of images, to be sure.

Peace,
Tony

ok, hopefully these links will work….

one of the original images:
http://img64.exs.cx/img64/6904/RedAnger.th.jpg

and an edited one (it may be too small detail to see, but theres a fuzzy green line between the chin and the tshirt. obviously i could edit that out separately, it’ll just take ages.)

thanks a lot for your help, elle

Based on RedAnger2, it looks like you did a pretty good job, except for the line. If you had selected that blue shirt with the magic wand you could feather the selction and that would help. But you could also use Select|Grow to include all adjacent pixels falling within the tolerance range specified in the magic wand options.

You could also use the Select|Color Range tool. Any of these would probably do you just fine.

Let us know.

Peace,
Tony

Well for whatever it may be worth, I just played with it, and it’s not as easy as it sounds 🙁

Just me asking something dumb…why didn’t she wear a red shirt in the first place?

Wow, that is difficult! I couldn’t find a way to convincingly get rid of the off-color line. I tried creating a new layer, filling it with red, setting it soft light, and then adding a mask filled with black (all of which can be "actionized"). Then the only fine tuning would be to set the brush to white and paint in the off color line. However, it didn’t work out too well. I tried setting the layer mode to color, but it preserved the luminosity of the blue line and so there was an unnaturally bright line around the chin. Hopefully some PS wizard will be able to help you.

Like Tony said, the part you did do, you did a good job on.

Edit: Okay, here’s a quick way (maybe not the best looking result, but it’s a starting point). Here’s the original:

Original <http://www.mustangmods.com/data/8259/original.jpg>

Adding a Hue/Sat adjustment layer, with colorize checked, boosting the Saturation a bit, and also the lightness (to account for the dark line usually left behind).

Hue/Sat Layer <http://www.mustangmods.com/data/8259/settings.gif>

Then add a mask, filled with black, and paint back the chin area.

Had to give it a try.

<http://www.quickflicks.0catch.com/Pages/Anger.html>

I used the Eyedropper to set the forground color sampling the blue T shirt under the nose.

Then Rolor Range slider set to 70 with the + Eayedropper I added all uneven parts of the shirt.

Select Modify Expand 4 px followed by Smooth 20 px.

Sammpling the nose with the eyedropper and an Edit-Fill with the foreground color gave this result.

One could or should use a texturizer filter to give a texture to the shirt.

Embellishing Norbert’s approach and assuming the selection was placed on its own layer before being expanded and filled:

Instead of adding texture, add the original tonality by switching the layer to Color mode.

Yeah, the trick, if you want to call it that is to grab some red from the face and use a color blend mode adjustment layer. That’s not the problem.

The problem is the line. Not that big of a deal on a single image, but 20 of ’em? Sheesh.

I’m still noodling out how to capture that in as few steps as possible.

Peace,
Tony

A totally different approach.I extracted the head, then I saved it with a different name, opened the original and selected all blue with the tolarance set to 60 and shift clicked then I filled it with a pattern and pasted the head over it resising the head a little.

Long time I did not do some playing in PS. It’s addictive isn’t it?

Remember we are working on very small files the original would be much easier and more accurate. Did not try to get it perfect just playing, not even thinking in masks and pen tools.

Try checking the colorize box in hue/saturation and adjust the colour of the shirt using both saturation & hue rather than just adjusting the hue neat after doing the Select>Color Range & Select>Modify>Expand selection.

For some reason doing it this way does not produce that line nearly as prominently, though you will still get it if you miss the expand step.

Resampling your original to 300dpi to smooth the pixellation, I did a Color Range at Fuzziness 200 in the middle of the shirt (broadly deselecting the eyeballs & top half of the image at this stage – unless you want red eyes!), Expanded 7 pixels, then Hue/Sat with the Colorize box checked at Hue=0, Sat=50%. Took about 45 seconds.

See if this gets you into the ballpark.

Recording an action of this worked just fine with the image flipped horizontally, so if your other images don’t vary too wildly, you should be able to convert the lot by running a similar action.

Thanks Fred, you’re amazing – that’s sorted it. Using actions I’ve just finished the entire lot in about 15 min, and I didn’t even need to flip them.

Cheers everyone for all your help – lots of good ideas, I tried them all out (typically, its the last one I try that proves the quickest)

If there’s ever a next time, she’ll be wearing a red t-shirt to begin with!

‘s OK, Elle.

To explain, though – I only flipped it to give the action a "different" image to run on, just to make sure that it would work (particularly in the selection part) with differently positioned subjects, and thus verifying the action before posting my response.

Fred.
