I work on a PSD file and of course everytime I edit it, I save it but for a few times now, the files I work on refuse to open after I edited it few times. When I try to open it, it says: "Couldn’t open C:\…\url\… because of a program error.

This is really random and I did nothing special except saving it like I did previously. Is there a way to fix this. I can’t redo all my work everytime it does that and I cant let Photoshop open 24/7 to prevent that :/

Thanks.

Try an experiment.

When it happens again, see if PS will open a different PSD. If it doesn’t, try closing down, rebooting the machine and try your file again.

If it does open a different file but not the one in question, then try opening that file with Image Ready. If it opens in IR, save it again as a PSD, and re-try in Photoshop.

Let us know.

It can open different PSD files and I rebooted it and it doesnt works. I think it save the file wrong in some ways and I cant open it anymore.

I have PS 6 installed too and its the same. All I did last time I edited the file is that I clicked: File -> Save.

When I try to open it with IR, it says its not in RBG so it cant open it: <http://www.pgtour.net/temporary/pserror2.jpg>

What version of Photoshop are you running?

What is the file size? What are the image dimensions?

Shoot. I’m stumped.

Will anything else open the file?

You say that you don’t want to have to re-create your work every time (which is understandable, to be sure), but that suggests that there is something in the image content causing the issue – in as much as even if you recreate your work, you experience the problem with this file.

If you feel like posting the image to a website and link to it here, I’d be happy to take a look – others would as well, I’m sure.

That’s the only advice I can give at this point, since other images open fine, and it seems to be related to this images, but only at a certain point.

Peace,
Tony

Pat,

You may want to create a new login. In Newsreader view, the square brackets are causing your display name to show as:

I have absolutely no idea man. When you use the File|Open dialog, it shows the preview, but I get the same error. It won’t open in PaintShop Pro either, but is viewable in image viewers (like ACDSee).

I never installed IrfanView (Free), but I hear that it will convert images – it might be worthwhile to get it, install it, and convert the image to a Tiff and see if it opens after that.

Other than that, I’m stumped, personally. But it’s supposed to be CMYK not RGB, right?

Peace,
Tony

Pat,

I can’t offer what the problem would be, but I can tell you that I also observed the same program error when attempting to open your file in both PS7 and PSCS. I can open it in IrfanView and ThumbsPlus, so I can only guess that there might be some sort of layer corruption that isn’t seen by the latter two programs. When I used IrfanView to resave the image as a TIF, the TIF opened just fine in PS7 and PSCS. I’m assuming also that your PSD was layered since the PSD size was about 4 times larger than the TIF size.

If anything reassuring is to be found here, it would be that it seems it is the image that is corrupt rather than your PC. But, that doesn’t answer how the corruption was introduced…so I suppose the PC may still be in question. If there are any details you can share about the image content….color mode, number and types of layers in the image, etc., perhaps someone could spot a problem. However, I’d think that anything created in PS should be savable as a PSD format file, regardless of content.

Daryl,

Thanks for checking it.

When I used IrfanView to resave the image as a TIF, the TIF opened just fine

Were the layers preserved?

Yes, "program error" with PS 7.
However, IrfanView DOES open it fine.
there is a relatively large black area below the column steps, so I’m wondering if this has EOF error. PS won’t touch them, but Iview will open all the image that’s there, showing black after the EOF.

Were the layers preserved?

That is THE question ^^

Ok, thanks guys, I will try to open it with IrfanView and hope layers can be saved.

To add to the confusion; After downloading (to my desktop) the icon for the file wasn’t the generic Windows icon for a document, nor the PS icon for a PS doc, but a mini version of the image itself.
I haven’t seen this before.

Program error here aswell.

Nope, Iview won’t do layers.

Pat:

I am having the same problem as you with PS 6.0. It also happens with JPEG files. After the program error, I cannot open the files. When I try with file open, the program closes on its own. Have you heard of any new solutions? Adobe is recommending upgrading to Photoshop CS, but I am afraid that the problem will still exist. I am new to this forum. Have you post the problem to Adobe technical?

Thanks,
Hayes
